Bangkok novel 148 - Only for free

Monday, July 31st, 2006

Duff had walked around in the neighbourhood near the Malaysia hotel. On his round he had come across things he could hardly wait to tell Larson about.

The opportunity came when two farangs were sitting outside the Malaysia hotel in the evening, drinking beer. The artificial waterfall was humming and the large fishes in the pond came up now and then to look at the guests.
- Look at that farang getting out of the tuk-tuk with the barboy, said Duff.
- That’s bad taste. I never pay for sex, said Larson.

Diary: Home improvement

Saturday, July 29th, 2006

Things are improving in our home. Chalerm now does both the laundry and the fish tank cleaning without making any scenes. I could get used to this.

While on the subject of homes. I visited our old apartment, the one we were kicked out of last year when the landlord decided to renovate the building. The apartment we used to have is now a furnished show unit and the overly polite staff duly showed it to me.

Hero of the day

Friday, July 28th, 2006

Here is web designer Patrick Kollitsch. He lives on Ko Samui.

Patrick fished my lost material up from the deep hole it had fallen into at Yahoo Web Hosting. More than a thousand posts and comments are back online. Now the site is back to normal, including such classics as “Chalerm is on TV”, and “When granny passed wind”.

Thank you Patrick. :)

Bangkok novel 147 - Bia in show business

Friday, July 28th, 2006

When Bia came home in the afternoon he opened the door with a bang and ran into the apartment.
- Superstar! shouted Bia. – I am superstar!
He jumped up and gave Peter a hug. Then he put his arms around Peter’s neck and locked his legs around Peter’s waist.
- Yes you are my superstar, said Peter, surprised by the energy the boy had.
- Real superstar! I famous!

Bangkok novel 146: Larson’s visitor

Thursday, July 27th, 2006

Duff was offended and decided never to speak to Larson again. For two days he avoided the Swede. But gradually Duff’s anger subsided, and he missed someone to talk to. Larson had been right about one thing - buying Cialis was no big deal. Duff was sure half the guests in the hotel took one pill or the other.

Caught on camera: Triangle Park in Penang

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

park

A kind reader sent me this photo of what I call Triangle Park in Penang, Malaysia. I am sure the spot has an official name but I don’t know what it is. So till then it is Triangle Park.

Notice the Indian cinema in the background. They show Bollywood movies in there. The bench-like cement structures are nice to sit on when watching people. This is where I met Sony the (money)boy and the mullah. Funny how people are happy to believe Penang is full of eager ladyboys but refuse to believe the mullah story. But even mullahs want their fun. ;-)

Diary: People like us

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

I went for a walk in the soi in the cooler air after sunset. To escape the traffic and the noise I went up the soi, away from the Skytrain, away from the tall buildings and the Silom road area.

Going in the other direction took me away from the farang zone and into the Thai zone, the maze of smaller sois where ordinary people live. I saw the Noodle Family. Now they were selling pancakes. Maybe I should rename them the Pancake Family.

Bangkok novel 145 - Gossip queen

Wednesday, July 26th, 2006

Duff was not good at confronting people. When he saw Larson sit by the pool, pretending to read a book while ogling the speedo boys, he wanted to tell the Swede what an unreliable gossip queen he was. But he could not bring himself to do it; at least not in the forceful manner he felt the situation demanded.

But Duff had to do something. Duff walked over to Larson with what he hoped was a disapproving expression on his face and sat down in a deck chair.

Chicken burger saga continued

Monday, July 24th, 2006

Regular readers will remember my struggle with 7-Eleven staff in Bangkok to get them to cook my chicken hamburger properly. The argument involves how long it must be in the microwave oven before it is edible. In 90% of cases the staff put the micro on a time which is too little to transform the chicken from a frozen lump to a meal.

I have developed the “haa!” method to deal with this problem, and to avoid unpleasant ice bits in my burger. I stand next to the micro and say “haa!” (five) when they put the micro on four or three.

I have to be quite insistent when saying “haa!”, or else they will overlook me. Who am I to tell them how to do their jobs?

The latest complication arose on the night shift in the 7-Eleven in the soi. As usual I wanted a “sa-tek gai” (steak chicken). As usual the guy put the mirco on 4 and as usual I said “haa!”.

- Haa? asked the boy, confused.
- Haa, I confirmed.

The boy stopped the microwave oven and I expected him to change the setting to 5. But instead he went to the freezer. He came back with a plastic bag with frozen chicken burgers. Next he began putting chicken burgers in the micro; one, two, three, four, five.

I had not forseen this interpretation of my “haa!”. I was reduced to wave with my arms and point to the “5″ button on the microwave oven.

The issue was then resolved.

Meet the models

Saturday, July 22nd, 2006

I have had photography as a hobby since I was a kid. I have advanced equipment. I live in a country with beautiful young men who are willing to pose shirtless for a reasonable fee. To meet these models is easy. What should I do about it?

I don’t do a lot of models. I have had three this year. It is just a hobby. I had thought about publishing a book with Thai boys, but I have dropped that plan. I don’t want the attention that such a publication could get me. If Thai authorities could decide that the innocent “Sticky Rice” magazine was obscene, they can find anything obscene.

Neither is my photography politically correct. Gay photography today is of muscle boys, California type. Mine are boyish and slim. And worst of all - they are Thai, which somehow means they are exploited. It doesn’t matter that they are not nude, or how old they are, in the political climate today a collection of Thai boy pictures would be suspect even if they were dressed.

Why am I not doing nude? There are several reasons.

1. The boys don’t like it. They are shy. Undressing stops at the underpants, sometimes at their pants.

2. Thai law is strict and any nudity is considered p*rn. This is not a joke. They throw people in jail.

3. I like the boys better when half-dressed. I think they are sexier when something is left to the imagination, and when what their wear adds to their personality.

4. I am not the type to do hard-core stuff anyway.

It seems most people who see pictures I have taken of a Thai boy assume I have had him in bed too. I am not sure why people believe this. Surely photographers in the West have models all the time without shagging them?

I never have sex with models. I want to remain professional and I want the boys to know that they can trust me. Word gets around. If I have one satisfied model he will recommend me to another boy. This boy will be more comfortable doing it when he knows this is not just another kinky plot from a customer. And when the model feels comfortable the pictures get better.

Do I wish I had them in bed? Sometimes. But that passes quickly. As attractive as he is, once I start working with the camera I am concentrated on what I do. Model photography is hard work. I get sweaty and tired from moving around constantly while directing the model. I can take up to 200 pictures in a session, saving only the best ones.

If I like the sexual tension with my models? Of course. That’s half the fun. Inviting a boy to model is partly a substitute for bonking him. If I can’t have him in bed at least I can have the pleasure of taking his picture. The model, on the other hand, will usually get excited during the session. I see that but I don’t comment it.

What does my boyfriend think of it? I had a camera around my neck the first day I met my boyfriend-to-be. I asked to take his picture and he refused. Later I asked if he could help me find models but he refused that too. He said he was afraid people would think he recruited them to my bed.

Chalerm doesn’t applaud the model activity. But he doesn’t have to. He just has to accept it. I never try to hide that I do it as think that would backfire. I let him meet the boys and talk to them. This has made him relax. He understands that a random moneyboy like the one from the park isn’t a threat to him. The boys quickly assure him that no extra activities are taking place. Sometimes he can get along great with them.

Chalerm will look at the finished photos and comment how the boys look and what they wear. The models will ask for copies, both on paper and in electronic form to send by email. They get very happy when they receive their photos and they run around showing them to everyone. Some of the photos I have taken of boys have boosted their “career” substantially when they have put them in personal ads on the Internet. That’s fine with me.

Ah, now you say: - Show me some? I have to be careful about that. I don’t want to put any photos here on a website with “gay” in the header. I don’t want to make them identifiable as working boys either, if that is what they are.

But I can show you this one. This was a nice guy and he was 23 at the time. It must be around three years ago now. The picture is here.

Making friends

Friday, July 21st, 2006

I was on gay.com Bangkok chat for the first time in ages. I had two interesting conversations. One was with a 28 year old Thai-Chinese middle class boy who could not understand how I could guess that he was a Thai-Chinese middle class boy. The other was with a 42 year old Thai man who lives in the same street as I do.

I told them that I had a bf already and was looking for chat and friendship only. But as usual the burden of my dazzling looks etc meant that they were interested in something more.

It is not easy to be as popular as I am. Soon I have to chase them away with bamboo sticks.

The younger guy asked what I was doing in a chat room if I had a bf already. A hint of Chinese purpose thinking? Must I be looking for a sex partner to be in a gay chat room? How about being there just to chat? He seemed to consider that a waste of time.

The 42yo chap is well read and well travelled. I have his phone number. It could be interesting to meet him over a cup of tea.

At this point you might say “But Silom Farang likes them young, doesn’t he? What is he doing with 40+ guys?” Again, this was not about cruising. I asked in the main room if there were any Thais over 30 there. For conversation I prefer mature people.

I used to have a Thai friend who must be over 50 now. But he too had designs on me and lost interest when I found a boyfriend. He hoped I could take him to Farangland, where he would open a Thai restaurant, presumably with his army officer dad’s money.

Maybe he was on to something. I could use a sugar daddy. Is there any law against farangs being kept boys too? Consider this an invitation for a patron. Please attach a recent picture and a bank statement with your reply.

Chalerm goes to America

Thursday, July 20th, 2006

Chalerm and I went to see Sea World in Siam Paragon, but it was closed due to a “private function”. A beefy security guard stood there. He was dressed in a “period” party outfit. He was African-American and his accent was too.

Is Halloween this time of year? And who keeps imported security guards? The US embassy? I didn’t dare to ask.
