Penang by night

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

Saturday night in Penang. Six months ago the rickshaw driver I had hired to show me where the pretty boys were had taken me down to the waterfront. There he had shown me various “lovely young boys”. When I had complained the selection was poor he had said it was better on Saturdays.

I remembered the parking guy I had been introduced to last time. He looked just as questionable now. I did not see Mr. Ratface, another person I was told was available. I guessed he was working. I did not see the chubby Chinese man we had chased either. This was a relief.

The waterfront was dominated by families and children. I did not see any People Like Us. Maybe it was too early at 8pm. In the shadows I met an Indian woman in her 40ies who asked if I wanted “girls or ladyboys?” I said I was just out walking.

Penang gay life

Saturday, July 15th, 2006

I have met the gay boys in Penang -all four of them. They were sitting in what I call Triangle Park, which is not really a park but a triangle-shaped traffic island in central Penang, at the top end of Chulia street. The traffic island has palm trees and some cement structures that serve as benches.

There are always people in Triangle Park - at least when it is not too hot in the sun. I saw the boys when walking by. One of them waved and smiled.

Bangkok to Penang

I am in the Islamic Republic of Malaysia again. Is it really six months since last time?

Air Asia is so cheap now that they could not lend me a pen to fill in the immigration form while we were in the air. I was supposed to buy one at 70 baht.

The cabin crew warned over the loudspeakers that stealing safety equipment was a serious criminal offense. They mentioned inflatable life jackets specifically. Who steals life jackets?

Welcome (again)

Tuesday, July 11th, 2006

It is now 48 hours since my web site crashed. I am waiting for a response from Yahoo Web Hosting to see if I can get it back. Meanwhile, life goes on and I am starting over again.

What else is happening?

Bangkok diary: London calling

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

- Hello? Yes. Yes, it is Silom Farang speaking. Buckingham Palace? Good morning Your Royal Highness. Oh did Your Highness read it? I see. Yes. I understand. I will take care of it right away, Your Highness. Goodbye.

Urgent: To clarify any misunderstanding arising from the previous post, I stress that this is NOT The Queen of England. Thank you.

Bangkok diary: This weekend

Monday, July 3rd, 2006

I spotted someone this weekend I haven’t ran into in a couple of years. He appeared in the door of one of the bars in soi Twilight, getting some fresh air perhaps. The last time I saw him he was on the Robinson corner. It’s a career of sorts.

I did some ogling in the soi. In one place the music was so loud I could not stay there, and left before they had sold me the obligatory drink. I tried to tell them why I didn’t stay but they could not hear me.

In another place they were using the Star Wars theme music as intro to their show. I don’t think Thais know how imprinted in our heads this music is for us farangs. I began to see Imperial Cruisers and R2D2 and Jabba the Hut. When the staff began to fiddle with the ropes I asked for my bill. I get dizzy watching the gymnastics. But some white women in the audience were excited.

Speaking of white women. I saw on television that Prince William had gone to Greece on holiday with a group of “girlfriends” once. This made me wonder. Go to Greece with one girl and she is your bonking mate. Go to Greece with six girls and they are your faghags. Ooops. I must be imagining things. In any case, God Save The Queen.

Bangkok diary: On time

Saturday, July 1st, 2006

Thais have a sense of punctuality similar to that of Swiss bankers. Tell Thais to come at a certain time at a certain place, weeks or months ahead, and they will be there on the minute. Be in Sukhumvit soi 12 the 1st of July at 0900 hours? No problem. A Thai boy will be there.

It is therefore strange that Chalerm’s dentist doesn’t give Chalerm appointments in advance. Instead the secretary calls the day before they want him to come. One should think they distrusted Chalerm’s ability to plan ahead and be punctual.

So when a Thai woman calls me on my mobile phone and starts talking in Thai about “rongpayabaan fan” it means Chalerm is due for another session in the chair. He goes there every month to adjust his braces at a cost of 1500 B each time (ouch!).

Yesterday when “rongpayabaan fan” called to get Chalerm for an appointment at 1pm today he changed it to 9am so he could do it before work. I was pleased with this. It shows he can plan ahead and be punctual.

At 9am I sat at the computer when Chalerm appeared, still half asleep, went over to the phone and told the dentist’s secretary that he could not come due to tiredness. See? A Swiss banker would be proud.

The shampoo crisis is solved. We now have two bottles of Head & Shoulders Classic. Who bought the 2nd bottle? Do you have to ask? I did.
