Bangkok novel 157 - The truth about Backdoor Bar

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

- How much? asked Duff.
Larson stepped on Duff’s foot under the table.
- There is no harm asking, right? said Duff.
- 4 000 baht, said the manager.
- 4 000 baht! That’s the most expensive boy I have ever heard of!

Airing our dirty laundry

Tuesday, August 22nd, 2006

When I had convinced my boyfriend Chalerm to do our laundry all was bliss. Except one thing. The ironed shirts he gave me smelled badly. The clothes had a staid, unpleasant odour, and it increased when I put the clothes on and air and moisture began to circulate through the fibres.

Bangkok novel 156 - At Backdoor Bar

Monday, August 21st, 2006

- Are you sure this is the right place? asked Larson as the two farangs looked down a small and dark soi.
- It is the right soi, said Duff. – Look, there is a sign above a door.
The bar had no touts or doormen outside, but the door was open. Duff poked his head in.
- Anyone here?
Larson gave Duff a push in the back.
- Let’s go in, shall we?

Thai boy in underpants

I found this one on the Internet. He looks Thai. In the rest of the series the underpants go missing, but I am not posting the naughty pictures as this blog upholds family values… :-P

The honest taxi driver

Sunday, August 20th, 2006

Here is another variation of my many taxi driver episodes. This was when I was up in Rachadapiesek road, an area around 10km from Silom. Rachada is lined with clubs and entertainment venues, but I have never been to any of them. I was however curious to see what was on offer.

Rachada is made for suburban Thais who arrive in their cars. Hence there are lots of roads and parking spaces, and far to walk between the different nightspots.

I gave up walking and stopped a taxi. I explained in broken Thai that I wanted to look around the area. The driver had trouble understanding this. Which particular club did I want to go to? Karaoke, massage, disco or pub? I said I only wanted to see the different places, not go in.

handsome guy shirtless

This guy had me confused. First I thought he was Asian. But on closer inspection I thought he must be white, or maybe a mix. But his hair looks Asian… What do you think?

Bangkok novel 155 - Selfish behaviour

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

Larson did not tell Lek what Dietmar had said. When Lek returned in the evening without explaining where he had been Larson’s first priority was to get laid, and Larson thought that bringing up what had happened in Germany would spoil the mood.

But Larson avoided Duff. Duff’s selfish behaviour had disappointed him.

Good news and bad

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

The older brother of the Noodle family was out driving drunk. The family called Chalerm 5am to join them going to a hospital in Ayuthaya. When they arrived it was over already. I never met this brother but Chalerm was quite affected. When he returned to Bangkok he refused to sit on the back of their pickup truck, sitting in the front seat instead. Seeing what can happen on the roads scares them, at least for a while. In Bangkok Chalerm helped them run the noodle business in the evening, as they were in shock. He also joined them at the temple.

Farang D is not speaking to me. And I have not received any money.

Chalerm is speaking to me. We were relaxing and chatting when he picked up my walled and examined it.
- Not beautiful, he said.
- I know. I have used it for several years.
- You must to buy new.
- You said you could buy me one at Chatuchak.
- I forget.
Chalerm then left and when he came back he said:
- Close eye.
I closed my eyes. Chalerm put something in my hands and when I looked it was a new wallet. It had all the features I was used to with my old wallet. Someone must have studied it.
Chalerm emptied the old wallet and spread the contents, asking me what I wanted to keep. Some of it went to the trash. He then put the rest neatly in place in the new wallet.

More no money no honey

Friday, August 18th, 2006

I had an argument with Farang D’s Thai boyfriend yesterday. He called me up and laid down the law. Seen from his point of view I was rude to give them this ultimatum (pay me or I will stop working on your web site). A friend should not behave like that. I must understand that finances are tight in the low season. Besides, they are doing me a favour by employing my boyfriend part time (and he gets paid).

Bangkok novel 154 - Dietmar’s Wuppertal

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

- How did Lek come to owe you twenty thousand baht? asked Larson.
- He borrowed it to pay for clothes, a mobile phone and other things he thought he needed in Germany. He bought luxury items. Be careful with Lek. You can’t believe what he says. I am sad to say his moral standards are not high.

No money no honey

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

I am discussing money with Farang D’s Thai boy manager by email. He sent me more web work and I responded that I had not been paid since April. The Thai boy responded “HOW MUCH???? And BE NICE!!!”.

He then said since I was a friend I should not talk like that. I said does being a friend mean I should not be paid?

Farang D has disappeared from view while his manager and I argue about this. The Thai boy still thinks my invoices for web work are a criminal conspiracy of overcharging. Farang D knows this is not the case of course, and his Thai boy is welcome to try to hire a Thai photographer for less than 10 000 B a day, or to try an Indian web designer who “can do everything for 2 500 baht”.

I looked up the statistics. The last 24 hours their web site received 24 bookings, making it easily the most profitable site in their business.

How to survive the Thai-Cambodian border

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

1. An umbrella comes handy. You are lucky if it rains because you can put the umbrella between you and the visa touts. This makes them give up quickly.

2. If still persistent, you can shake the wet umbrella at the tout – accidentally of course. (I admit having done this once.)

3. Tease the corrupt border official. When he says “no photo?” you say “no photo”. When he whispers “100 baht” show him that your photo is tucked inside the passport.

4. Lie to avoid paying bribes. When the border official asks if you are on a visa run and going back to Bangkok, say no. You are going to Cambodia to see the temples.

5. Lie more avoid paying bribes. Don’t stop at the table where they sit waiting for visa runners. When they say, “where are you going?” you say “Siem Reap” and keep walking.

6. Get ahead of the backpackers in line.

7. To fit in with the backpackers, say loudly “There are too many tourists in Thailand. I am not a tourist. I am a traveller”.

8. When middle-aged white ladies give you disapproving looks because they think all middle-aged white men are sex tourists, give disapproving looks back because you know they steal the best moneyboys.

9. Reject all offers of rip-off busses.

10. Say no to any offers of Cambodia lady boom boom.

11. Keep five year old pickpockets away.

12. Regardless of what you make per year, tick “Over 80 000 US dollar” on the Thailand entry form. You want to keep Thaksin happy.

Bangkok novel 153 - Who gets the boy?

Wednesday, August 16th, 2006

- Excuse me, said Duff. – You can’t barge in here and give orders. Lek has a will of his own. Let him decide what he wants to do.

Both farangs paused and looked at Lek, who was immobilised by indecision. Lek wanted to stay on good terms with both farangs, but now they forced him to choose.
-Eh? said Lek and looked from Duff to Larson and back to Duff again.
