A discreet flirt in the market

When I flirt with Thai boys I want to be discreet. I don’t want others to notice it, I don’t want to make any fuss or embarrass anyone, and I want it to be deniable. I like to keep it ambiguous. What, me flirt with a boy? Not at all. I was just being friendly.

These are the principles as I carry out my New Year’s resolution about flirting more with Thai boys. These were also the principles I wanted to apply when I ran into a handsome young man in the market. He sat at a table with the back to me, and to get a better look I had to turn my head when I had passed him. From the side I had already seen that his shirt was unbuttoned almost down to the belly button. I mention this so you will understand I was behaving modestly and only was forced by the geography of the boy sighting to do what I did.

But I turned my head. It seems both the boy and a female vendor selling chicken behind a stand had noticed I was looking at him, and when I turned to get a full view they caught me.

The boy smiled broadly and Ms Chicken let out an exclamation of joy. No, it wasn’t an exclamation of moral disgust. It was delight.

I walked for another few metres, thought about it and turned back. Now they were ready for me and Ms Chicken shouted in excitement to the boy. The boy smiled shyly and gave the occasional short reply. I didn’t understand what they said, but the word “farang” was repeated often, and the tone was that of an older woman teasing a younger person about his luck in romance, with smiles and laughter.

I sat down on some steps to watch the scene. The boy was one of two waiters. The other waiter was a girl. Actually waiter might be too grand a title for the cleaning and dishwashing he did – he was more of an assistant. The two assistants were at a fruit juice stand. I went over to Ms Fruit, a beautiful Thai lady in her 40ies, and asked for a mix of orange and banana. This was 10 baht. While I was doing this Ms Chicken kept up her loud talk about me.
Ms Fruit thought Ms Chicken was overdoing it.
- Farang, farang, farang! repeated Ms Fruit with disdain.

I got my fruit mix in a plastic bag with a straw and sat down at a table next to where the boy and the girl were sitting. I felt the eyes of everyone in the market on my back. What would my next move be?

I felt a rain drop on my head.
- Fon tok (it is raining), I said to the girl, who was sitting nearest to me. She smiled but did not understand.
- Fon tok, I said again.
- Fon tok, repeated the girl.
- What did he say? asked the boy.
- Fon tok, said the girl.
- Fon tok, said the boy, weighing these words of wisdom from the foreigner.

Then we had a nipple situation. The boy had unbuttoned to such a degree that not only was his lovely chest visible; I got a glimpse of his right side nipple too. I stared at it. The girl smiled again. Ms Fruit had sat down out of view behind the fruit stand but Ms Chicken was smiling with encouragement.

It was not very hot in the market now after dark, not by Bangkok standards. Why this excessive undressing? Was it a signal?

I thought about this. Having watched people, and see the boy get up and help some customers and studied his youthful face and body language, I came to the following conclusions:

1. The boy was straight
2. The boy was available
3. The girl was straight
4. The girl was available
5. I should drink more fruit mix

I had intended to speak to the boy, and ask him his age and name, but when Ms Chicken had put me on the spot like this I could not bring myself to do it. The tension was too much. Meanwhile Ms Chicken shouted over my head to the boy again, something about his good fortune in having a farang admirer.

Ms Fruit did not appear to be involved in this scheme. But she was a beautiful woman. What had she done with her good looks in her youth? Maybe she was not as innocent as she looked?

I left, thinking I could come back the next day and speak to the boy in less stressful circumstances. But the boy and the girl were not there the next day. I had seen them Saturday evening. Sunday evening they were gone, but the vendor ladies were in the same spot. Where did the suspiciously cute young ones go?

This is the same place where the abundance of gay boys suddenly appeared another weekend night a few weeks ago. Something fishy is going on in that market. I must find out what it is.

A charming story! Nice to see you plumbing the depths of real Thailand! Best wishes from guess who?

  2. Silom Farang Says:

I wrote a story about the sleaze and prostitution in my soi, and Mr. Real Thailand liked it!

  3. Anon Says:

Sleeze and prostitution are in the bars you frequent in Pattaya and Suriwong; this story reveals more about the fun to be found in daily life here….and I hope you will continue inthe street rather than the awful bars. But up to you of course! Chok dee , RT

  4. Silom Farang Says:

But Mr. Real Thailand, these were poor Thais trying to sell their youths on the street. You should be shocked.

    HUMMM
I think this was attraction, not prostitution.
You where attracted to the young man and he was to you.
But shame on you!! As the older man and a farang, you should have taken the initiative. Not hung back waiting for this poor lad to the first step forward.
AHHH, so many opportunities for love missed because of indecision…

Hope you go back next Saturday evening!

I see no evidence of sleeze or prostitution in the story as you wrote it, just 2 people attracted toone another and the older ladies encouraging it with delight, as is their way. Perhaps you have not revealed things you arranged later with the boy? Failing that, please explain where the sleeze and prostitution enter in to your story, as poor me can see no evidence of this. Real Thailand ( who is all in favour of attraction but not prostitution)

    “1. The boy was straight
    2. The boy was available” =
    prostitution.
The real Thailand is that Ms Chicken wiches the boy good luck making money.

  9. Anon Says:

If you care to wander away from the tourist areas you will find many people who do not think like that, the majority of Thais who act and live very differently from some of the people who hang around tourist zones.
As to the idea that “the boy was straight, the boy was available”= prostitution, that is the supposition of the author, not what transpired. Please donot confuse supposition with fact.

[…] I asked Ms Fruit where her cute male assistant had gone. Ms Fruit said he had left, which I understood as that he had quit his job and is now showing off his chest and left nipple somewhere else. […]
