Abroad is home

Away

- See you in Malaysia, said Chalerm.
- You are kidding, right?
- I will come on Friday, said Chalerm, who had looked up airline prices and threatened to come for a surprise visit.

My moment of gloom passed when I left Bangkok. Once I was in the air I had nothing more to worry about. I think too much.

I get a light culture shock when I go from one country to the other. But after a few hours I adjust.

I met old friends, such as The Pirate. I asked him about my lost favourite, Cute Boy. Earlier The Pirate had, at different times, told me the following:

1. Cute Boy is dead.
2. Cute Boy is deported to Indonesia.
3. Cute Boy is in prison.

After all this drama The Pirate finally admitted he didn’t know where Cute Boy was. But I know how to find him. He is a waiter at a restaurant somewhere. I only need to visit every restaurant in the city and then I will find him.

Either that or I give up and one day he will appear again by himself, as they always do.

I sat in an Internet cafe when The Pirate came in.
- I have no money, said The Pirate.
- Why don’t you go out and sell some pirate movies?
- Police say I can not.

Later I found The Pirate on a street corner. It had rained and The Pirate was wet and cold. Feeling sorry for him I gave him five ringit for a meal.
- It is not enough, said The Pirate.
- Wrong answer, I said.
I reached for his hand and took the money back.
- The correct answer is “thank you”, I said.
I gave him the money again.
- Thank you, said The Pirate.

I talked to him again. He said I am no good since I don’t give him money every day. I said he has had too much Tiger (beer).

Methinks Chalerm is making sure he isn’t replaced, or that he is at least the head-wife ;)

(oops, I also posted this wrongly in the Obama topic above. Please forgive my stupidity and delete it there)

I’ll keep a bacon fat candle buring in the window of Burger King until you return.

I’ll keep an eye on Chalerm too. Actually, I think he has taken a job as the Interior Minister.

it was really good of you to teach the pirate a lesson of saying ‘thank you’
