Bangkok novel 148 - Only for free

Duff had walked around in the neighbourhood near the Malaysia hotel. On his round he had come across things he could hardly wait to tell Larson about.

The opportunity came when two farangs were sitting outside the Malaysia hotel in the evening, drinking beer. The artificial waterfall was humming and the large fishes in the pond came up now and then to look at the guests.
- Look at that farang getting out of the tuk-tuk with the barboy, said Duff.
- That’s bad taste. I never pay for sex, said Larson.

- Neither do I, said Duff.
- If they don’t like me enough to give it for free I am better off without them, said Larson.
- Agreed.
- So while people back home think I am mongering at a grand scale in Thailand I am actually just dating.
- You never pay for it?
- That’s right.
- Except when you give them money.
- I don’t give them any money.
- What did you give Khun O?
- Nothing.
- You had to give him something.
- Nope. He was free.
- You think a hot young thing like that jumps into bed with you without expecting money?
- Maybe he would charge you. I got it for free.
- No taxi money?
- Only a minimum.
- No other expenses?
- I am not stingy. I cover their expenses if they incur any when they come to see me.
- Such as?
- A room if he doesn’t have any and I want to stay alone, getting ready for the next lover. I have them waiting in line.
- A room? Here?
- Yes.
- Plus taxi?
- Plus taxi. He lives quite far out in the suburbs.
- Plus meals?
- Do you think he should starve?
- What was the total?
- Not much.
- How much?
- A minor sum.
- How minor?
- Only one thousand baht.
- A thousand baht? And you say you didn’t pay him?
- He didn’t get the money. The hotel got most of it.
- How can you be sure he spent it on renting a room?
- That’s obvious.
- How?
- He didn’t leave the hotel. If he had left reception would have called me, asking if everything was ok.
- And they did not call?
- No.
- When did you see Khun O again?
- I haven’t seen him yet. Maybe he is busy with studies or whatever.
- You think he is a student?
- That’s what he said.
- What if I tell you he is a full time moneyboy?
- I don’t think so.
- What if I tell you he lives in Moneyboy House?
- Moneyboy House? Ha ha! I never heard of such a thing. You are making this up, right?
- It has another name. But it is a cheap guesthouse up the soi. It is full of moneyboys. Nobody else stays there. They have small rooms where the boys sleep four or five deep.
- How do you know this?
- I saw it today. I saw Khun O there too.
- Maybe he was visiting a friend.
- Wake up, Larson. He is a moneyboy.
- If you were right he would not accept my money to rent a room here in the hotel. Then he would just walk up to your so-called Moneyboy House instead.
- Which is exactly what he did.
- You think you are so clever, Duffy. But you forget the reception. The reception had his ID card and he did not get it back. Which means he stayed in the hotel overnight.
- That’s what he wanted you to believe.
- What do you mean?
- If he had demanded his ID card back from the reception they would have called you, right?
- Yes.
- And then you would have known he was not spending the money on a room but putting it in his pocket instead.
- Which has been my point all along, dear!
- So he didn’t take his ID card back.
- Right.
- What time was this?
- Time? I am not sure. It was late. Maybe 4am.
- So he didn’t need his ID card at that hour.
- What are you hinting about?
- He went home to Moneyboy House to sleep. The next day he dropped by in the daytime to get it back. And since he was coming from the outside, saying he had forgotten the card, the reception staff didn’t call you. After all, if there had been murder and mayhem in your room they would have known about it by then. So no need to check anything. They gave him the card.
- You have your fancy little theories, Duff. But I have to leave now. I have this Isaan super stud waiting for me. He is gorgeous! Ta ta!
The Swede got up from the table and left without waiting for Duff to respond.
- Hey, said Duff. - You forgot to sign for your beer!
Larson didn’t hear him.

Moneyboy House is in the soi where the 7-Eleven near the Malaysia Hotel is, soi Bumpen. There are a number of budget guesthouses in this area. In at least one of them all the rooms are rented by MBs.
