Bangkok novel 2

151. Duff and Lek

Bjorn and Larson left the hotel when the lunch was over, but Duff remained, saying he had business to take care of in the Sukhumvit area.
- Actually, said Duff when he was alone with Robert Miller – I wanted to ask you if there are any places in Bangkok where they are not so strict about the 20 limit.
- I don’t know about any, said Robert. – 20 is the universal age these days.
- I find that hard to believe. This is Thailand. There must be some place where things are a little lax?
- Not among the nightlife spots. DJ, Freeman, Soi 4, the clubs up near Ramkamhaeng… they are all 20.
- Anywhere else?
- The bus?
- What? The bus?
- You can chat them up on the bus.
- I don’t speak Thai.
- Sorry, I forgot that. Well, nothing much remains then. Only dodgy places I would not recommend.
- What dodgy places?
- Some of the smaller gay host bars. The dark small places. Like Backdoor Bar.
- Backdoor Bar? Ha ha! What a tacky name for a bar. I have never heard of it.
- It is a small place in a side soi to Suriwong. Backdoor Bar has the dirtiest interior, the sleaziest manager and the crudest boys. I don’t recommend it.
- But they have younger ones?
- That’s what I heard.
- Maybe I should go and have a look. There is no harm in looking.
- You can look, but don’t touch. I don’t want you to get in trouble again.
- I am a big farang. I can take care of myself.
- Please be careful. Backdoor Bar stinks. I would not trust anyone who works there. It must be the lowest of downmarket bars in Bangkok.
- Backdoor is the worst gay bar in Bangkok? That’s quite a recommendation. I must see this place.

When Duff returned to the Malaysia hotel he found Lek, Larson’s former flame and lover, sitting outside. Lek looked unhappy but smiled when he saw Duff.
- Hi Dupp, said Lek.
- Hi Lek. What are you doing here?
- Lar-san angry me. He say I no come inside.
- Is that what he says?
- Yes. Him angry me too much.
- What have you done to upset him?
- I not know. I come back Thailand. Him angry. I not do. Only him thinking too much. Now I no have room. I stay room my friend. But tomorrow no stay. I no money. You give me money 100 baht eat rice?
- Are you hungry?
- Yes.
- You can come eat with me.

The farang and the Thai boy sat down in the restaurant. Lek ordered Isaan food. Duff was full already and ordered a soda to keep the hungry Lek company.
- So how was Germany? asked Duff.
- I no lie. Is cold. Dietmar no good heart. People Whoppertan no good heart. Not take care me. But have money so much.
- You were not sad to leave Dietmar?
- I sad little bit. But now him stay Thailand. Him have business.
- What kind of business is that?
- Him have bar soi Twilight. Open nek week.

- Here comes Larson! said Duff and nodded in the direction of the lobby.
Lek twisted his neck to see. – Him go play Internet.
- He is doing his email and his Old English course by corresponding with his teacher.
- Old English? Why him not learn new English?
- He he good question, Lek. But listen, when we have paid the bill where are you going?
- I not go. I no have room.
- I see. You can come to my room then.
- Ok, said Lek.

When Lek was done eating the two left the restaurant and went to the reception. Larson sat concentrated in front of the computer, typing with two fingers.

Duff grabbed Lek’s hand. Lek did not resist and they held hands while waiting for the lift. When the door opened they entered it. None of them looked back to see if Larson was watching.
