152. Not what you think
In Duff’s room Lek headed for the fridge and helped himself to a can of Singha beer.
- Hey, did you ask if you could take that? asked Duff.
- Solly, said Lek.
- It’s ok. But please ask before you take anything. It is not free. They put it on my bill.
Duff sat down on the edge of the bed. Lek sat down next to him and put his hand on Duff’s knee.
- I like you, said Lek. – You han-sam man. You not old.
- Thank you but that won’t be necessary, said Duff and removed Lek’s hand.
- Why? asked Lek.
- Never mind. Want to watch television?
Duff handed the remote control to Lek, who started flicking through the channels. He found a Thai boxing programme and settled for that. The contestants were hitting and kicking each other in what Duff thought was an alarmingly violent manner.
- Does it hurt? asked Duff.
- Yes, said Lek.
- Have you tried boxing?
- I boxing in Isaan, said Lek and did a few moves in the air. – I alway win.
- Is that how you got that muscular body?
- I exersay.
- Good, said Duff.
Someone rang the doorbell in aggressive manner. Duff ignored it.
- You not open door? asked Lek.
- I know who it is.
- Your friend?
- Yes.
The doorbell rang again, even more insistent. Then someone banged on the door.
- I am coming, said Duff, but he took his time getting up.
Duff unlocked the door and the person outside opened it impatiently. It was Larson. He entered and walked to the middle of the room, pointing his finger at the Thai boy.
- Lek! said Larson. - Have you no shame? Are you selling yourself to this farang for money? Have you gone mad? Did your trip to Germany ruin your judgement completely?
Larson then turned to Duff.
- And you, young man. I must say I am disappointed. What kind of friend are you? I understand you have problems getting laid but do you have resort to boy stealing? I didn’t think you could sink this low.
- It is not what you think, said Duff.
- Not what I think? I saw you in the lobby. I can’t turn my back for five minutes before you try to lure my boy to bed. What did you promise him? Two thousand baht?
- I promised him nothing. We are just sitting here watching TV.
- Oh sure!
- For your information Lek has no place to live and he is grateful to receive my support.
- Support? Is that what you call it? You have bought him. You are exploiting him. It is called prostitution my dear. I thought you said you were against it.
- I am against it. I never pay for sex.
- Neither do I.
Lek followed the argument closely, his eyes going from one face to the other, but the English the farangs spoke was too fast and complicated for him to understand. Lek did however understand he was the topic.
- And you, said Larson and pointed at Lek again. – You come with me.
