155. Selfish behaviour
Larson did not tell Lek what Dietmar had said. When Lek returned in the evening without explaining where he had been Larson’s first priority was to get laid, and Larson thought that bringing up what had happened in Germany would spoil the mood.
But Larson avoided Duff. Duff’s selfish behaviour had disappointed him.
A couple of days later Duff was on the phone with Robert Miller.
- I am going to Backdoor Bar, the place you recommended I should never visit. Any final words of advice?
- Yes. Don’t go.
- The more you warn me the more curious I get.
- If you go, don’t go alone. Bring someone to double check your judgement.
- I was going to ask Larson, but he is not speaking to me.
- I heard you tried to steal his boy?
- Not at all.
- If not, what did you do?
- I just teased the old Swede a little.
- Were you actually interested in this Lek fellow?
- No.
- In that case, why did you bring the boy to your room? I even heard you held hands in the lobby.
- I wanted to make Larson jealous.
- You succeeded!
- I thought Larson was too harsh with Lek. I gave Lek a helping hand getting Larson back. There is nothing like competition to increase the value of Lek in Larson’s eyes.
- How scheming. You are becoming Thai.
- Is that a compliment? Thank you.
Duff decided to call Larson.
- Hello, said Larson.
- Hi it is Duff.
Silence. Larson then said:
- I presume you are calling to apologise for your behaviour?
- I am going to Backdoor Bar. Want to come along?
- Backdoor Bar? That filthy place off Suriwong?
- Yes. Have you been there?
- Never. I heard it is the worst gay bar in Bangkok.
- That’s why I want to see it.
- And you want me to come along?
- For moral support. And you can be my bodyguard.
- I have no interest in that place.
- Rumour has it they have boys of risque age in Backdoor Bar.
- A good reason to stay away.
- Ok. I was just asking.
- Don’t do something I would not do.
- Of course not.
Duff showered and brushed his teeth before going out. He wanted to be presentable, just in case. When Duff stepped out of the lift in the lobby he saw Larson sitting in the sofa, looking impatient.
- What took you so long? asked Larson. – You were doing the whole pedicure?
- I didn’t think you wanted to come along.
- I don’t. But I see it as my ethical obligation to keep you out of trouble in that place. Therefore I will join you not as a participant, but as an advisor and a neutral witness.
- I see. Shall we get a taxi?
