159. The bait
The Swede and the Englishman walked slowly up Suriwong road to Rama 4. Thai boys stood in the shadows, saying “you wan massass?” and “hello hansam man”. On the corner of Silom and Rama 4 they spotted a McDonald’s restaurant.
- Are you hungry? asked Duff.
- No. But I am thirsty, said Larson.
- Me too. It is hot! How about an orange juice with ice?
- Make it super size, said Larson.
Larson sat down on the stairs outside the McDonald’s while Duff went in to buy drinks. Larson kept an eye on any young male walking by.
When Duff returned with two large drinks Larson said:
- See that boy standing on the corner?
- Yes, said Duff, slurping juice.
- He is cute. He has been looking at me and smiling.
- That one? He is too young for you.
- I’ll be the judge of what is too young for me.
- Excuse me? I am supposed to be chicken chaser here. Leave him to me.
- I saw him first!
- All right. You can have him. Actually there is something fishy about him. He is cute, but something isn’t quite right.
- What would that be?
- I can’t put my finger on it.
- I will go over and talk to him, said Larson.
Duff’s mobile phone rang in his pocket.
- Robert here, said the voice. – Report from Backdoor Bar please?
- Larson nearly had a fistfight with the slime ball manager.
- Ha ha! Did the manager try to cheat him?
- The manager was asking astronomical prices for supposedly young flesh. But they were not nearly as young as he told us.
- Really? He lied about their age?
- He certainly did and we found out about it.
- Congratulations. You have uncovered a new scam – the fake underage trick.
- It must be profitable with the prices they are asking!
- They are selling the excitement, said Robert. – Imagine the thrill for a fresh tourist when he is with what he thinks are illegal and dangerous Thai boys. No wonder they pay up!
- We didn’t pay up. We just left.
- Good. I guess they don’t love you at Backdoor Bar after this.
- No. So now we are exploring the street instead.
- See anything interesting?
- Larson found a teenager here on the Robinson corner. He is talking to him.
- A teenage boy? Outside McDonald’s?
- Yes.
- Is he alone?
- The boy? Not anymore. Larson is drooling over him. Larson who never goes with anyone under 20.
- Where exactly did the boy stand?
- Right smack on the corner.
- In the light or in the dark?
- In the light. He was easy to see.
- Oh dear. This is bad.
- Why?
- Do you see any Thai men standing nearby?
- No.
- Look again. Anyone at all?
- Just a guy selling fruit from a chart.
- That’s one of them. Anyone else? Look at the elevated walkway.
- Robert, now you have me worried. What is this about?
- Do you see him?
- There is a Thai man watching Larson and the boy from above. But how did you know?
- Don’t stare at them. But you have to stop Larson. It is a trap.
