Bangkok novel 2

166. Bia’s flirt

- Now what? asked Duff. The two farangs and the Thai boy were standing outside Central Lad Prao.
- Now we find Noi, said Larson.

- Exue me, said Bia. He took up a small mirror from his pocket and inspected his face. - I go toilet. You waiting me?
- Sure, said Larson. - You go powder your nose, darling.

- Did you see that? said Larson when Bia was out of hearing range.
- See what?
- The way Bia was looking at me.
- Sorry, I didn’t notice.
- He looked at me.
- Yes?
- He likes me. He is flirting.
- Really?
- I have excellent radar for these things. I knew right away the boy fancied me.
- Oh did he?
- Yes. But I am not interested, of course. He is too sissy for me. Look at him! He walks like a girl.
- I think Bia is cute. But he is taken anyway. He is Peter’s boyfriend.
- I know that. I just can’t help notice that he is interested.
- That’s perceptive of you, Larson.

When Bia came back (with adjusted makeup) the group took a round in front of the shopping centre.
- There are two main entrances, said Larson. - How many motorbike taxi stands are there?
- Two, said Bia.
- So we begin by asking here. Which one is the boss?
Bia found the boss.
- What name him boy you want? asked Bia.
- Noi.
- Him how old?
- Um quite young. 19 maybe?
- Where he from?
- Isaan.

Bia gave this information to the boss of the motorbike taxi drivers. The boss shook his head.
- Him not know, said Bia.
- There can’t be that many drivers here? asked Larson.
- Maybe he is on the other side of the building, said Duff.

At the other side a similar collection of motorbike drivers were lined up, and Bia spoke to their boss.
- Him not know, said Bia.
- Maybe you should describe him, said Duff.
- Describe him? Isaan looking, black hair, thin, short, brown eyes.
- Just like everyone else, said Duff.

- Can you ask if any of the drivers has a brother named Lek? And if this brother Lek is known to have been in Germany?
Bia translated this. The boss replied.
- Him not know, said Bia.

Larson looked carefully at the drivers who were waiting. They were as Duff had said all from Isaan, young and skinny and with dark eyes and hair. But none of them were Noi.

- I don’t know what to do, said Larson. - I had hoped he was here so we could spot him. Or at least that someone knew him.
