Bangkok novel 2

190. Early morning

After sharing their views on life and Thai boys the farang group split up. Larson went to sleep, happy that he had scored with someone who needed almost no taxi money, merely a thousand baht.

Robert Miller went home, hoping that the baby and the guests were asleep. Peter went back to an empty apartment, wondering where Bia was. Duff went upstairs and waited for Peter to call.

- No, Bia is not here, said Peter on the phone.
- He could be anywhere, said Duff. - Don’t try to find him.
- Last time he went to Pattaya.
- He can’t go to Pattaya at this hour. There are no buses.
- He is probably sleeping over with a friend. Have you called around?
- I don’t have their phone numbers.
- In any case… he will show up. They always come back. That’s what Robert says, anyway.

When Duff had finished the conversation with Peter he showered and went to bed. It was 4am.

Duff thought about the charm of young Noi and how close he had been to him. The boy had been right next to him in bed when fate in the form of Bia marched in and took all the attention. How annoying.

Duff tried not to think about Dietmar and the bar. So Noi was hired to play Superman on the streets? He seemed to like that. But what would be next? Would he end up on stage like his brother Lek?

Duff heard a sound. It was a faint knock, too low tell where it came from. He heard it again. It could be someone in another room.

Knock knock. It sounded like someone tapping his finger on the door.

Duff went to look. Noi stood there. He had changed to normal clothes and smiled broadly.
- Yes? said Duff.
Noi looked like he expected to be invited in. Duff hesitated. He was tired of boys coming and leaving as they pleased, and of the scenes they made. But Noi put up his sweetest, most innocent face and Duff had trouble telling him to get lost.
- Well, said Duff. - So you are back?
- I miss you too much, said Noi.
Noi stepped forward and embraced Duff.

The two stood like this for a while till Duff, affected by the warm body contact, let Noi in and closed the door.

Deja vu! thought Duff. Here I am in bed with Noi again, as if nothing happened. He has not said sorry. Thai boys don’t say sorry, do they? They are such drama queens. They arrive with great fuss and leave with even greater fuss. Why can’t they behave like normal people? Must it be bliss or crisis and nothing in between? And must this change back and forth twice a day? It is exhausting.

- Ahem, said Duff. - There is something I must ask you.
- What? said Noi.
- When you went back to Dietmar.
- Yes?
- What did you do?
- Not do.
- Did you have sex with him?
- No have.
- Good, said Duff.
Silence.
- But you like sex? asked Duff.
- I shy, said Noi.
- How shy?
- Little bit.
- Hmm, said Duff.
Something moved under the bed sheets.
