192. The Mile High Club

The aircraft stood on the runway, waiting for permission from the control tower to take off.
- How are you doing? asked Duff.
- Excellent, said Larson.
- You look pale.
- I do? It must be the light in here.
- You are sweating too.
- We are in the tropics. What do you expect?
- Take-off is my favourite part of flying, said Duff. - It is so powerful. The surge from the engines, the increasing speed pressing you back in the seat. And then you are in the air.
- Certainly, said Larson. - But keep an eye on the wings.
- The wings?
- In case they fall off.
- Wings don’t fall off.
- That’s just what you think. If I had the window seat I would watch them.
- Wings never fall off aircrafts.
- Don’t be so sure.
- Have you ever seen a wing fall off?
- Not firsthand. But it can happen.
- Sure. You are out driving in the countryside and you say “What are those things in the field”? And someone says “It is just some aircraft wings that came down here”.
- Now you are sarcastic, Duffy. I am trying to warn you.
- Thank you. Oh! Here we go!
- I am closing my eyes. It is to better enjoy the sound of the engines.
- Of course.

Nothing more was said until the plane was in the air, climbing rapidly.
- Larson? said Duff.
- Yes?
- You don’t have to open your eyes. But could you please let go of my arm? It hurts.
- Uh? Sorry. I didn’t notice.
- Thank you. And the wings are still there.
- Good.

When the plane had reached cruising altitude Larson opened his eyes again.
- Where is the cute cabin boy? asked Larson.
- He is behind us.
- Here he comes. Wow! Did you see that?
- See what?
- The way he was flirting with me.
- No, I didn’t. Actually I don’t think he looked at you at all.
- That’s part of the flirt. To avoid eye contact.
- I am not convinced.
- He is strutting, showing off for me!
- Larson, you are imagining things.
- Don’t be jealous.
- I am not jealous.
- You are always jealous.
- I am not. In the unlikely event that you get this flight attendant you can keep him.
- This is the right moment. He signalled that he is ready.
- He signalled nothing. Where are you going?
- To join the Mile High Club!
