202 - No Thai boys?
- I am going to Pattaya, said Peter Hart on the phone.
- Are you sure that’s a good idea? asked Duff.
- I know it isn’t a good idea. Everyone says I should not come running after the boy. But I can’t sit still and wait. I am going nuts not knowing where he is.
- I don’t know where Noi is, said Duff. – He is not in Dietmar’s bar. Lek is gone too. The mamasan says they are on “holiday”. I wonder what that is supposed to mean.
- Did you ask Dietmar?
- Dietmar isn’t there either.
- Would you like to go to Pattaya with me? Or are you busy?
- What should keep me busy? I have become a Malaysia Hotel layabout.
- Is that a yes?
- Maybe Larson would like to go too?
- We could use him as a trouble magnet. He attracts all the nonsense so you and I don’t have to deal with it.
- Ha ha! Poor Larson. He means well. At least sometimes.
Duff knocked on Larson’s door. When the Swede opened Duff said:
- Peter and I are going to Pattaya to look for Bia. Want to come?
- Why would I go to that cesspit of sleaze by the sea? asked Larson.
- It is just a day or two. We think of sharing a taxi this afternoon.
- A taxi! That’s far too extravagant. The bus is fine.
Duff and Larson met Peter Hart at the Ekkamai bus station.
- The trouble with people nowadays is that they don’t know the value of money, said Larson.
- They buy gold watches when a plastic one would do. Or they take taxies to Pattaya when there is a bus.
- It would not be that more expensive when there are three of us to share the fare, said Peter.
- Saving for the future, said Larson. – What happened to saving? People are living on borrowed money. One day it is all going to crash. Mark my words!
The bus entered Sukhumvit road in heavy traffic. Duff reached for a book.
- You don’t want to keep me company? asked Larson.
- I though you wanted peace and quiet.
- And Peter is listening to music on that thing. What happened to conversation?
- OK. What should we talk about?
- Thai boys?
- Good idea. Had any lately?
- No, said Larson.
- Me neither, said Duff.
- But we are going to Pattaya. In Pattaya you have to fight if you want to avoid getting laid.
- For money. It is not the same.
- I have resolved never to touch a moneyboy again.
- You have?
- Yes. It is free or nothing.
