210 - The reunion
Larson watched the reunion scene with irritation. Excessive sentimentality, thought Larson.
Peter came back with Bia, who wiped his tears away. Duff and Noi were cuddling in the chair, and Bia began applying sun block to Peter’s back. Giggles and laughter spread.
- But what about me? asked Larson.
- Yes, what about you? asked Duff.
- I feel left out.
- Why?
- You guys are so busy with your boys. I feel like the fifth wheel. This is not polite behaviour.
- Get Lek then.
- Lek is working in the restaurant.
- Bia and Noi are also working. Marketing. Ha ha!
- I will remember this, said Larson and rose from the chair. - I am leaving. You people are bad company.
- Ta ta! said Duff.
- Where are you going? asked Peter.
- To somewhere people can be bothered to speak to me, said Larson.
Larson went back to his hotel room. He rested on the bed and stared at the ceiling. He tried to take a nap but could not fall asleep. Too many worries circulated in his head. Could he ever show his face in Gothenburg again? Would he lose his job? How could he make a living? And why did the others have Thai boys while he had none? Larson began wondering if coming to Thailand had been the biggest mistake of his life.
The phone by the bed rang.
- Leception speaking, said the voice. - Have Thai man wan go your loom.
- Who? I don’t expect anyone.
- Him name Lek, sir.
Lek knocked softly on the door. Larson opened but blocked Lek’s way.
- What do you want? asked Larson.
- Hi, said Lek.
- Yes?
- I come see you.
- Why?
- I miss you.
- I haven’t seen you for weeks.
- I busy. But I thinking you every day.
- You had your chance, Lek. You chose Dietmar and the bar.
- I no lie Dietmar. I wan stop working bar. Is no good.
- Too late.
- I miss you too much.
- Don’t try sweet talk.
- I wan speak you.
- We are speaking now.
- Why you angry me?
- I am not angry. I am just finished with you.
- Oh, said Lek in a hurt voice.
