Bangkok novel 2

216 - Larson grilled

- This is crazy! You have people hiding in the bushes in Pattaya taking photos of me? Why? Don’t you policemen have something better to do?
- You didn’t answer the question.
- You didn’t answer mine.
- The police give high priority to abuse cases, said Gran. – Are you aware that we can prosecute Swedish citizens for crimes committed in Thailand?
- Yes I am aware of that law.
- Why do you know that? Do you take a special interest in this issue?
- Don’t twist what I say. I read the newspapers. It is common knowledge.
- So where is the picture from and what were you doing?
- It is Pattaya and I am with my friends.
- Who are your friends?
- The young one is Duffy from England. And then there is Peter. He is Australian.
- And the kid?
- I don’t know anything about the Thai boy. He was not with me.
- We know something about the boy. He is underage.
- I had nothing to do with him.
- You keep dubious company, Mr. Larson.
- I don’t like your tone, Mr. Gran. What are you trying to pin on me?
Detective Gran leaned forward across the desk and looked Larson in the eyes.
- I know your sort, Mr. Larson. You are scum. You are lower than dirt. I know what you are up to when you are in Thailand for months. You will do ten years minimum for this. I will personally see to it.

Larson was taken by surprise by the hostility and didn’t know what to say. Gran leaned back in his chair and was satisfied with himself.
Aften an uncomfortable silence Gran took the initiative again:
- Did you visit any other countries in Asia?
- Only Malaysia.
- Only Malaysia. May I see your passport please?
Larson handed his passport to the officer. Gran opened a page in the passport and held it in front of Larson.
- Cambodia. You have been to Cambodia.
- I forgot.
- How can you forget a whole country?
- It was just a visa run to the border. I didn’t really enter the country.
- You have memory problems, Mr. Larson? First you can’t recall going to Pattaya and now Cambodia is forgotten too.
- Stop twisting things!
- I stick to the facts. Do you?
- I don’t remember everything on the spot. I am tired and jetlagged. You are trying to trap me.
- You are trapping yourself, Mr. Larson. Pattaya and Cambodia are places many will not admit having visited. In the police we are well aware why.
