222. Duff in the bushes
Duff left the Malaysia Hotel for a walk in the late afternoon. He was pondering his relationship with Noi.
The boy was more materialistic than Duff had expected. Face or not face, this craving for luxury goods was the same. And now Noi had began to talk about how he needed a mobile phone. It could not be any mobile phone of course. It had to be a high-end model.
Duff walked down the soi towards Rama 4. He crossed the street and gave some coins to a blind beggar who sat on the footbridge and played music. The bridge was crowded and a boy in university uniform bumped into Duff. Duff wondered if that was really an accident.
Duff entered Lumpini Park. The roads were busy with joggers using the cooler air at sunset for their exercise.
A young Thai man sat on a bench and tried to make eye contact when Duff walked by. He was dressed in black jeans and a black t-shirt. He looked rough. Rough trade? Sorry I am not interested, thought Duff.
Duff sat down on a bench. He said no thanks to a child who wanted to sell bread crumbs to him. But when he saw the disappointed face of the child he bought a bag anyway. Duff went to a bridge and threw crumbs to large fishes that came up from the muddy pond to eat.
Another Thai boy walked by. This one was cute.
- Hello, said Duff.
- Hello, said the boy and stopped.
- Where are you going? asked Duff.
- Go have fun, said the boy.
- Where is the fun?
- Up to you.
Duff threw the rest of the crumbs to the fishes. The boy nodded that Duff should follow him.
Now what? wondered Duff. Into the bushes? That could be dangerous. Duff hoped he would not see a knife pointed against him. Nah, the boy looked harmless. And he was cute.
Duff became aware that someone was following him. It was the boy in black. What was he doing here? Duff waved to him that he should go away.
