Bangkok novel 2

231. Robert’s in-laws

Bia and Peter Hart were snuggling on the sofa in the afternoon when someone rang the doorbell.
- Your friend? asked Peter.
- No have. Maybe friend you?
- I don’t think so. Go see who it is, will you?
Bia came back and said: - Is farang. Him friend you.
- Which one?
- I forget name him. Him farang white hair.
- Robert?

Peter went to the door and found that Robert Miller was indeed standing there.
- Hello Robert. What brings you to these shores? asked Peter.
- Your sissy boyfriend has no manners. He just let me stand here rather than invite me in.
- Sorry. Do enter, please. A glass of cold water?
- That would be nice. It was darn hot upstairs.
- Upstairs? In this building?
- Yes. I was looking at this apartment they have.
- I didn’t know you needed an apartment?
- It is similar to yours. One bedroom.
- But you have an apartment already. And if I am not mistaken you own an entire hotel too.
- It is complicated, said Robert.

Bia worried that his makeup had faded and went to the bathroom to apply more. Peter and Robert sat in the living room, drinking mineral water with ice.

- I haven’t made up my mind yet, said Robert. - But this looks like a nice building. Since I saw your apartment once I have kept this building in mind in case I need to rent something.
- And now you need to rent something?
- Yes. I need an escape. Somewhere they can’t find me.
- They?
- My boyfriend and his family and wife and all those people. I am desperate for some privacy.
- I see, said Peter. - And this means you have to move out?
- What choice do I have? It is a racket at home nowadays, with the baby and that foulmouthed wife and the grandmother who never seems to leave. And now my boyfriend’s second wife has arrived. I didn’t know about her.
- Let me guess. She has a baby?
- Not yet. But she is pregnant. She doesn’t get along with the first wife so I had to put her up in a hotel room.
- Does it never strike you that maybe they should leave and not you?
- As I said it is complicated.
- It looks easy to me. Your life has been taken over by this ungrateful horde of imposers.
- Well… said Robert and sighed.
- Your boyfriend is straight?
- Yes. All my boys are straight. I guess it is my punishment for liking them manly.
- And you no longer sleep with him?
- That ended years ago.
- So why do you keep him? And even more, why do you put up with his women and children and in-laws?
- It is Thailand, said Robert. - You haven’t been here long enough yet to understand. If I don’t help them, who will? And I am still fond of my boyfriend.
- They are walking all over you!
- It can be a bit much at times. So I thought having a secret apartment would help. I can go there when I need some peace.
- And bring back selected Thai boys?
- That too. I am not getting anything from my boyfriend but he still is jealous if I bring home someone else. He will not tolerate even Tawan muscle boys despite knowing they are professionals.
- Robert, this is pathetic. Can’t you see he is using you? If I were you I would kick them all out!
- I need him in the hotel. He is my manager. He is the only one I can trust.
- It doesn’t sound like he is worth it.
- Maybe you are right, Peter. But I can’t bring myself to do anything about it. I just hope there will be no more wives and babies showing up.
