Bangkok novel 245 - Mother Duff III

novel.jpg

Duff went around in circles on the floor. He threw his arms up in the air and said:
- I have never been so disgusted in my life!
- DD, you are acting like a child, said the mother.
- My own mother! And with this guy. Of all people it had to be him.

- Lek and I are adults. We can make our own decisions, said the mother.
- Have you gone mad? This is your first day in Thailand and you end up with this… this…
Lek tried to make himself invisible. He was dressing and reached for his socks.
- I go now, said Lek.
- A brilliant idea, said Duff.

Lek ran for the door and disappeared.

- DD, I have been divorced for fiftheen years, said Ethel Duff.
- I don’t want to hear it. Have you no shame?
- You are over-reacting.
- You always said you were against prostitution.
- Of course. But I don’t see the connection?
- Lek is a moneyboy.
- A moneyboy?
- A professional!
- You mean he is available for those nasty old tourists? That’s awful.
- Yes. And now you are one of them.
- Excuse me?
- You are no better than any of the rest.
- DD, you misunderstand. This is different.
- How is it different?
- I spoke to Lek in the reception and we became friends. Lek happens to appreciate mature women.
- Is that what he said? What a joke. Lek is in it for the money.
- I didn’t give him a penny.
- Come on. What did you give him?
- Nothing.
- How much?
- Nothing. Only some taxi money.
- Taxi money? Is that what he calls it?
- It was only fair that I helped him a little. He said he was short of cash for the trip home.
- Lek never takes taxies. He lives right up the street.
- He didn’t say that. How do you know?
- I know him.
- DD, you must accept that your mother has a life.
- You call this having a life? You make me SICK!
- Enough talk, said the mother. - Where do we go for dinner?
- You go wherever you want. I go somewhere else. Bye!

Duff pressed the “down” button impatiently. The lift slowly made its way up the floors of the hotel.

The lift door opened. A bell boy, a foreigner and some luggage were inside.
- Larson! said Duff.
- Hello Duffy, said Larson.
The bell boy took Larson’s luggage out of the lift.
- I ran into Lek downstairs, said Larson. – What is wrong with him? He didn’t stop or say hello or anything.
- Lek was in a hurry to leave the hotel before someone punched his lights out, said Duff.
- Who? What is happening?
- Never mind, said Duff.
- Tell me. Is Lek in trouble?
- He is making himself unpopular.
- How?
- I don’t want to tell you.
- Duffy, you have to tell me, said Larson.
- Sorry. It is private.
- Private? Are you fooling around with Lek?
- Me? Not at all. I have enough with Noi.
- I don’t believe you, said Larson.
- I have nothing to do with Lek, said Duff.
- So tell me what is going on.
- I can’t.
- What did Lek do?
- Nothing. Forget it.
- Duffy! I am not letting you get away with this nonsense. We go to my room, we sit down and you tell uncle Larson everything.

Duff sighed.

Peter Hart went to visit Robert Miller, who had rented a secret love nest in the same building.
- So you really did it, said Peter.
- I had to, said Robert Miller. – I need some escape.
- I thought you were going to kick those leeches out.
- I will. But this is not the right time.
- Will it ever be the right time? Those Thais are taking over your life.
- I am fond of the baby, actually.
- It isn’t your baby.
- My boyfriend’s baby is as good as my baby.
- They are using you.
- Maybe.

- Now what?
- Now I go out to find some Thai boy for the housewarming. Want to join me?
- Where are you going?
- Grand Palace area.
- It is dangerous there.
- Not really. In ten years I have only been mugged twice. One of the bad guys was so handsome it was almost worth it.
- What kind of boys are there?
- If you come with me you will find out, said Robert Miller.

    Bloody frustrated women, poor Lek!

Poor Lek?! Mrs. Duff didn’t even say how much “taxi money” she had given him, but she’s a lady who TIPS taxi drivers 500 baht. I bet she gave him at least 2,000. (”It’s only a few pounds”)

Reminds me of the German whose brother came to visit Chiang Mai — totally new to the scene — and fanned out 18 500-baht bills, inquiring if this would be enough for a night out. This was back in 1992, and the brother simply didn’t listen when told that one or two of those bills should do just fine! :-)

    Dear Ann Landers,

    Oh God!!!!

My 80 year old oft-married mother is visiting Thailand right now and I’ve introduced her to the scene.

I’ve even taken her to Sunee Plaza where she said “Everyone has to make a living.”

I’ve introduced her to Wan, the young man that I “sponsor” as well as Toum, a long time “interest” in CM.

Do I have to worry that Mum will be hopping into the sack with folks that I’m hopping in the sack with?????

Please reply quickly as this whole thing has the potential to be ickey and/or incestuous by proxy.
