Not enough
I sat in a Blue Bird taxi in Jakarta and we stopped at red light. To our right was a police car with four uniformed officers. “Here comes the corruption squad”, I thought. How prophetic that turned out to be. (more…)

Jakarta by night
How did I end up in Indonesia again?
I was going to Malaysia for the August visa run. I had bought the tickets and planned to stay away for a week. But when I made hotel reservations on the Internet I didn’t get any reply. So I called and they said they did not reply because they were full. (Hello? Did it occur to you that the customer might like to get an answer, any answer, so he can make other arrangements?)
I called other hotels and they were all full. They said Malaysia had a school holiday and it was high season for domestic tourism. I found some hotel rooms available on the Internet, but they were over my budget. (more…)

Trouble with the in-laws
There are many stories about foreigners getting screwed in Thailand but this one from 2007 is a classic. For some reason the worst stories are usually about straight foreign men and their Thai bargirl wives, and in particular if the farang moves to the Thai girl’s village. (more…)

Chalerm was in Laos. He called from Nongkhai and talked about taking Air Asia to Bangkok but ended up on the bus anyway. Someone stole his suitcase (my carry-on size Pilot with wheels) from the bus and Chalerm called from Mochit to tell me this. (more…)

Infecting the population
According to Rido Triawan, the chairperson of Arus Pelangi (”Rainbow Current”), an Indonesian LGBTI rights organisation, a new anti-gay and lesbian campaign is sweeping Indonesia’s capital, Jakarta, in the wake of hysterical media coverage about a so-called “Gay mutilation murder case”. (more…)

Night shift
Sometimes I get gay taxi drivers in Bangkok. This was the case with the young man who picked me up on Suriwong road one evening this week. Before I had even entered the car the driver said:
- Looking for boy? (more…)

Falling
Pattaya Mail wrote yesterday that tourist arrivals in Sin City are down 30%. Since Thai authorities don’t like to publish bad news or negative statistics things must be grim when they admit this. (more…)

Queens in Reykjavik
Bored with tropical boys? The annual Iceland Gay Pride Parade is underway as I write this. It looks like a lot of the 300,000 inhabitants of the island show up at this event. Maybe they want to see if the neighbour has come out of his closet yet.

Iceland is up here

Where the action is
Did anyone try this hotel? It is Bally’s Studio Suites and it opened on Silom road a few months ago. The hotel is on top of Burger King and right next to DJ Station and soi 2. Workmen removed the restroom in Burger King to make room for the entrance to the hotel.
A bored-looking security guard sits outside but I haven’t seen any guests. This hotel is right in the middle of gay nightlife, not to mention in the middle of moneyboy territory. It is so close that you probably get free boom boom from the music in soi 2 all night. Heck, you don’t even have to go out, you can just wave a 500 baht bill from the window and see who takes the bait.
Rates are 2400 baht and up. Bally’s website >>
