Trouble

Whenever I feel Thailand is a crazy place it helps to read about the Philippines. I looked up the Angeles City ex-pat website harrythehorse.com, which lists one murder, violent attack, scam and blackmail after the other. But don’t worry, says the site, Angeles City is safe. (more…)

Gay extortion in Malaysia

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Warning

I have heard some half-baked warnings about extortion of gay men in Malaysia, where sex between males is illegal, and this is a call for specific information. If you know, could you please respond to this post?

At Utopia-Asia info on some Malaysian crusing spots says “beware of decoys”, but nothing more. Who are the decoys? How does the blackmail work? Is it about getting caught for having sex in public or is it in private too?

One reader wrote in a comment that he knew several gay foreigners who had been blackmailed for money in Malaysia. By who? How?

Beware

Friday, August 24th, 2007

I saw two white-haired farangs sit by a table and talk to a young man in Silom Complex the other day. I can’t be 100% sure but this person of Indian appearance reminded me of the infamous date robber moneyboy that has operated in Bangkok earlier. See older post with photos >>

Sex and crime in Malaysia

Warning

The following may sound like the script for a low comedy, but it is true. In Malaysia they have a cheeky scheme with girls and boys of the night. Often ladyboys (transvestites) are involved, but all genders can do this.

Ronny Ulbrich
At 25

A German student at Ramkamhaeng University, Ronny Ulbrich, was killed in his room in Bangkok this week. According to press reports the police believes a male friend of Ronny did it. For the details see this thread on thavisa.

R.I.P. to Ronny. The rest of us should take this as a reminder that it can be dangerous out there. Choose your friends carefully.

Pattaya extortion variant

Friday, May 26th, 2006

I heard the following gossip in Sunnee Plaza: A tourist took a moneyboy to a short time hotel, certain activities took place in the rented room, and a knock knock on the door followed. Price 200 000 baht.

The twist was that the moneyboy was not a bait put out in the soi by the extortionists, as I have heard of several times before. Now it was the hotel owner who was in cohorts with the Powers. The hotel owner has an arrangement where he calls ”them” when a customer takes someone suitable to a room. For this the hotel owner gets a share of the profits.

I don’t know the exact age of the moneyboy in this story, but I believe he was a teenager. My Thai source said the boy was somewhere between 15 and 20.

You have been warned.

Warning: The robbery date

Tuesday, May 9th, 2006

Two Indian-looking men are accused of robbing gay farangs at gunpoint in Bangkok. The number of victims is large. They specialise in not-so-young-anymore foreigners who come to Bangkok, contact them on gay.com or silverdaddies.com, take them to a rented room and rob them. I have been hearing about their activities for two years.

The full story is on thaivisa.com, read it here.

Disclaimer: These men are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law blah blah blah. You get the drift. Just stay away from them.

The general advice is to take dates back to your hotel, where the boys have to deposit their identity card in the reception. Don’t go with a stranger to what he says is his home.
