My new Mac
I have a new Macintosh and it is heavenly.
The people in the Apple shop in Silom Complex have said three times now that they would get the 24 inch Mac in stock “in only two days”. Each time they wanted me to leave a 20% deposit. How stupid would that be? Then I would be locked to that particular shop and it could take months before they deliver. Ta ta!
A shop in Pantip Plaza had the iMac 24 inch. No deposit, no nonsense, just buy it.
I used the wrong PIN code when I paid for the Mac. I did it three times and the card was blocked. Brilliant. By the forth time I realised I was using the wrong code, but then it was too late. The shop tried to get manual confirmation from Visa Thailand. No can do - the farang didn’t bring his passport and he is suspicious because he screwed up with his PIN.
That took two hours and three phone calls to my bank in Farangland to sort out.
It should not be too easy. That would kill the enjoyment.
And enjoyable it is. The boy who carried the box down to the taxies was hardly born when I bough my first Mac 20 years ago. The screen of that one was 9 inches in black and white. It was a peep hole but it was superior to MS-DOS and Wordperfect, the competition at the time.
Now I have carried home the largest monitor I have ever used. It looks big in the shop but when I got it on my desk it was enormous. This thing is 1920 pixels wide and 1200 high. It is huge and beautiful and I sit here just admiring it.
But where is the computer? There is no computer. They hid it in the monitor somewhere.
Chalerm is in Farang D’s office. He sent a text message saying he hoped I would find a nice computer. I wondered if I should wait and let Chalerm unpack the new wunder-machine when he came home, as if it was Christmas, but I could not help myself. I had to start using it right away.
I am happy. Bounce. Bounce. Grin.

Macs are amazing and that one is a beauty. I use a very similar one. Make sure you use the iTV programme…you can record TV shows. It’s brilliant. Enjoy it!

There really is nothing like that 24 inches of sleek glossy splendor! Well, maybe…. I’ve drooled over that machine a few times myself. Congrats SF… I’m green with envy

Thanks… Regarding the price, I saw a comparison with a similar spec Dell PC. The Mac was only marginally more expensive. It is a high-end home computer and worth it.

I have a HP server and three Dell workstations in my home and even I wouldn’t even begin to compare a Mac to a Dell…
You might be able to spec a Dell to a Mac but their really is no comparsion…
The Mac just comes together and functions so much better than a Dell could ever hope to do…

Great to see you have an all new Mac - and the best one can buy at the moment. As somebody else said in a previous post, the new Mac OS (Leopard) arrives October 26. You should get it by then from your shop for free or for a nominal fee. The upgrade to the new system is easy.
And good news for us, the readers of this blog: With your built-in iSight camera you can give us great insights into the Mansion and its various inhabitants!

Some screens, the mac lcd’s in particular, have a very bright glossy look due to whatever coating they have on the surface of the panel. It looks like glass. It lets light through unreduced like glass, but it reflects light that hits it an angles like glass too. So please tell me after a couple of days whether you have to sit in a dark room to enjoy it or its ok to use with an overhead flourescent light on, because I’ve been wondering about that.
I like my dimmer (but no less contrasty) 21″ 1600×1200 pc monitor. Its a samsung but rebranded by dell.FP2100 or something. US$700 about 3 years ago, very nice. But someday I’ll need to buy anotherone and those kind of display monitors are very very bright and shiny.

Congrats on your new puter. The bigger the mac the shorter the words, it is writ.
Interesting that we measure distances by pixels now. I’m so backward I haven'’t figured out what a cubit is yet.
