Diary: No end in sight

When will this end? Chalerm was on the radio, channel 96.5 in Bangkok. He was interviewed for 25 minutes, he says. Journalists keep calling and want him to appear. I am joking with Farang D that he should make Chalerm wear a t-shirt with the company logo when he appears in the media.

Next time he is on TV, says Chalerm (as if getting on television was the most natural thing) I can come along as a VIP guest, sit in the front row among the audience and be interviewed about my opinion. In Thai or English? I asked him. English. Oh dear do I dare?

We have fresh numbers for the new website I made for Farang D. I was amazed. His company is making half a million baht from it per month, getting an average of twelve customers a day via the Internet. And this is the low season. Farang D thinks traffic will be twice that in the high season. This indicates an annual income of ten million baht from the site.

That’s turnover, not profit, but still. Once I am paid for making it the web site costs just 400 baht a month to run. There are no agents to pay and no local middlemen who wants bribes, kickbacks and favours, which Farang D hates. He calls them the gold chain gang.

Never one to rest on his laurels or to think something good is good enough, Farang D wants to triple the income from the site. Phew! I’ll see what I can do.

Songkran is next week. My friends are fleeing like Bangkok was hit by the plague. Japan, the US, France, England, Hong Kong, Australia, Germany, people want to be anywhere but in Thailand. On Monday, or maybe Sunday afternoon, the first water throwers will appear. From then on I am in siege mode. I will only go around in taxies or on the Skytrain. I will hoard food and DVD movies. Going to the gay area around Silom road is out of the question. That’s one of the worst places.

Expect to hear me whine and complain about Songkran. Is there nothing nice about it? Well, since so many people have left town the so-called broadband I pay for is actually performing like it should during Songkran, instead of the snail’s pace I usually get from my 2.5mb line I will get something near the advertised speed. It is a good time for downloading music and movies.

Did Songkran once. It was interesting and fun. but not something I want to repeat.

Take care of your camera. I had a digital camera die during Songkran from getting wet even though it was in a plastic bag. I might as well as been dunked given the amount of water dumped on me.

My new digital camera is not leaving the house while the water war is on. If I want to take pictures of the madness I will use a disposable one.

A friend of mine was successful taking Songkran pictures with an expensive Nikon, which was not destroyed. He used underwater housing.
