13. Peter and Mark 2
Peter asked Mark what the hardest thing to give up for priesthood was.
- Girls, said Mark. I miss girls.
- I don’t miss girls, said Peter. Not having children is a loss but I can live with it.
- There are other and higher kinds of love, said Mark.
God’s creation is beautiful, thought Peter when Mark came out of the shower. The water drops on Mark’s shoulders and chest reflected the skintone under them. Peter wanted to be near his friend, as near as possible. He could not articulate this need but it was strong.
The two young seminarians became boyfriends without being boyfriends, they were lovers without being lovers and they even had sex without actually having sex. Peter was surprised the first time Mark kissed him. But it felt too good to resist and Mark assured him that it was nothing wrong with such a display of brotherly love. Since they were both men this was safe; there could be no lust or desire in it.
In a similar way Peter was taken aback when Mark helped him with his embarrassing personal problem. It was not healthy, explained Mark, to let the fluids build up for too long. Since Mark supported Peter’s decision not to masturbate Mark unselfishly gave his friend some help. And Mark was right; it was easier to concentrate on Latin once this was taken care of. I am lucky to have such a wonderful friend and brother, thought Peter.
