31. A good catch
Larson is out of control. Should I tell him he has teamed up with a notorious moneyboy? thought Bjorn. Nah, if I do that he will accuse me of being envious. Larson will tell me I am a spoiler and that I should mind my own business. Look at him! He is so proud of his catch. He doesn’t know that his expensive makeover and John Travolta performance wasn’t necessary. Waving a five hundred baht bill in the air would have done the trick. Well, Larson will find out soon enough.
Larson walked out of DJ Station with his boy. Both had put their shirts back on when the music stopped. The boy had introduced himself as Lek. Lek was 23 and from Ubon. Or was it Udon? Larson was impressed that Lek spoke good English, better than the bar boys Larson had been fooling around with.
Bjorn gave Larson a thumb up from a distance and hailed a taxi outside soi 2. Bjorn went home to his boyfriend, who was sleeping already since he had to get up early for work. Larson and Lek went to Burger King.
Burger King was busy as DJ Station had just closed and a surge of Thai boys and farang came to have junk food. Many of the Thai boys didn’t buy anything, or only something small like a 15 baht ice cream. They preferred the cheaper and better food on the street. They came to Burger King for the air condition, to wait for friends or because they hoped to be picked up by someone if they had not been successful in DJ Station. Larson was hungry and ordered a Double Whopper. He let Lek have whatever he wanted. Lek chose a Coke and French fries.
They sat down by the innermost table in the corner, one of the few that were not taken already. Larson had his hamburger and Lek ate French fries one by one. They had not spoken much in the noisy disco and Larson wanted to know more about his date.
- Lek, said Larson. What do you do for a living?
- I work restaurant, said Lek. I am waiter.
Lek let his knee touch Larson’s knee under the table.
- That’s good, said Larson. What kind of restaurant is it?
- Noodle, said Lek.
- I like noodles, said Larson. Is your restaurant nearby?
- Is far. Yannawa.
Larson didn’t know where Yannawa was but he was satisfied that Lek had a job. Bjorn had hinted that some of the boys at DJ Station were dubious characters, whatever he meant by that. Larson had not seen any dubious characters, only a house full of Thai boys, one better looking than the next.
