Bangkok novel

32. The street kid

Duff said goodbye to Bia. Duff had been certain he would get laid and was in bad mood having wasted the evening on this boy. Duff’s holiday in Thailand was over soon and grey old England waited. Duff wanted to get as much out of the remaining days as possible and bummers like this one were not welcome.

Duff went to Silom road and stood on the pavement for a while hoping that some leftover boy would appear from DJ. But Duff didn’t see anyone he liked.

Duff gave up. He wanted to clear his mind before sleeping by taking a stroll. Going to bed unhappy wasn’t good. He rounded the corner at Robinson Department Store and saw a few moneyboys hanging out there. Duff considered taking one of them back to the hotel just to get a bed partner but tonight all the cute ones were taken. Outside the Pan Pacific hotel were more rent boys, they were older and more aggressive and said “you like boy?” or “you want boy massage?” No thanks, said Duff. Some of the boys in this area smelled of crime and danger and they were not attractive anyway.

Duff went down Suriwong road and had a look at the selection there. The bars in soi Twilight had closed and some of the go-go boys, now dressed in normal clothes, were loitering near the soi. Duff didn’t fancy any of them and walked through a darkened Twilight to Rama 4 road.

This is as close as I get to fresh air in Bangkok, thought Duff as he walked down Rama 4. There were few people out. Even at 2am it was hot. Duff mainly saw taxies that honked and tried to get his business. Under a road bridge some small street kids were sniffing glue. One of them ran over to Duff’s side of the road and said “ten baht”. Duff didn’t dare give the kid any money for fear of the rest of them coming to beg also.

A Hualongphong temple another group of street kids were gathered on a traffic island. Duff sat down by the subway station entrance to rest. He watched the disorganised group of youngsters who were begging from cars that stopped at red light. Street kids are often for sale, thought Duff. But these kids were too small and too dirty to be of interest. The exception was a couple of the older boys. They seemed to be in their late teens. One of them was even good looking. He was tall and had a pretty face. I want a closer look, thought Duff, and waved the boy to come over.

Duff had been right when watching at him from a distance. It was a handsome boy. The boy wore dark red short pants and a brown shirt. He had plenty of accessories, two necklaces, finger rings and bracelets. His hairdo was modern. This boy must be gay, thought Duff.

Some other street kids also came running when they saw their friend was with a farang. But the boy said something in Thai and the others remained at a distance by the subway entrance.

Duff tried to speak to the boy. The boy held out his hand and said “ten baht”. This was all the English he knew. Duff resorted to sign language. He pointed at himself (me) and the boy (you), pointed down the street (go), tilted his head, put his hand under his cheek and closed his eyes (sleep), five fingers (500 baht). The boy nodded.
