44. Boyfriend ethics
Is snooping on your boyfriend immoral? As a priest Peter Hart knew something about ethics. Spying certainly wasn’t a wholesome thing to do. But unethical as it might be, Peter was about to do it.
Something had felt wrong since his boy came back from his sulking absence. At first Peter thought it was just remnants of bad air between them since the holiday-in-France argument. But that didn’t explain it. Something had changed. It was in the boy’s eyes and body language. Peter was going to find out what it was. He systematically opened drawers, looked at computer files and went through pockets. What he found was not what he expected. It was shocking, yet familiar. It made him much angrier than the France thing had. Peter took a deep breath. A confrontation was coming and it would not be pleasant. Peter hoped to hear a very good explanation.

Larson had been in the arms of Lek for several days and wanted a break. Larson had expected Lek to go back to his restaurant job so Larson could get some quality time alone, but Lek said he was on holiday now. Thai boys didn’t understand the farang desire to be alone. To Thais being alone was sad, scary and something to avoid. To Larson it was vital to be by himself part of the time. If he had to be with Lek 24 hours a day he would go nuts.
Larson told Lek that he was going to Pattaya for a few days. Suspicion flared in Lek’s eyes at the mention of Pattaya but Larson assured him he was only going to the sea to get fresh air. Bangkok was choking for a Swede used to cold, crisp air, said Larson.
- I go with you, said Lek.
- Never mind, said Larson. I can go by myself. You need to get back to work, right?
- Is ok. I say boss I have holiday. I go with you.
- That’s very kind of you but it really isn’t necessary. I will take the bus. The guidebook says how to do it. I get a taxi to Ikanai and get on the Pattaya bus. Right?
- Ekkamai.
- Yes. Ekkamai. Meanwhile you can relax here in Bangkok. I will only be gone a short while. I will keep my room here at the Malaysia hotel. Ok?
Lek was not happy about the arrangement but he saw Larson was determined. Larson packed a small bag with clothes and toiletries and gave Lek a hug for goodbye. An hour later Larson was on the elevated expressway east of Bangkok, gazing out across the suburbs and looking forward to the infamous nightlife of Pattaya.
