45. Getting busy
Duff had a busy morning. He made a number of phone calls and spoke to his boss. When he had set the wheels in motion he sat down and wrote the following email to his friends in Bangkok:

From: Dandy Duff
Subject: My life
Hi
After much soul-searching I have made up my mind. Today I wrote my letter of resignation to the newspaper. I have hired a real estate agent to sell my apartment and tomorrow I will have a classified ad for my car. Later today I will visit my family and tell them I plan to move. I expect to be back in Thailand soon.

I hope you have thought this thoroughly through. You should keep open as many options as you can. Is it possible for you to take unpaid leave instead of quitting your job? Can you rent out your apartment instead of selling it? If you sell you are out of the property market. The way prices are going up you may not afford to buy a similar apartment if you were to return to England after some years. These are things to consider.

Duff had tried to keep Bia out of the decision about moving. As hot as the boy from Lampang was Duff had only known him for three days. It was a holiday fling, not yet a relationship. This was what Duff’s common sense told him. Duff’s heart said he should get back to Bia as soon as possible. Duff wrote a separate email to Bia telling him the news. Bia wrote back the following:

Peter Hart didn’t reply to Duff’s email right away. Only the next day did an email arrive from Peter. It wasn’t at all what Duff had expected.
