56. Boyfriend material
- So you are not going home early? asked Bjorn.
- I don’t see why I should, said Larson. Quite contrary, I have wasted time lately. I have to catch up.
- It doesn’t strike you that you are accident prone in Thailand? asked Bjorn.
- Coincidences and random events. Bad luck. I don’t see any pattern here. Do you?
- I would sleep better if you were in Gothenburg. How can you be here in January anyway? School is on. Are you not supposed to be teaching?
- I explained that in my email, said Larson.
- Which email?
- The one about my affection for Old English. Didn’t you receive it?
- That email. Sure. I got it. But that ancient stuff isn’t my cup of tea.
- If you had bothered to read it you would have seen I am on leave this semester to study Old English, said Larson. The roots of modern language. Anglo-Saxon. It is fascinating.
- Why? You are about to retire, said Bjorn.
- I am younger than you think, Bjorn. I have seven years left till retirement. When I take this course I will get a pay rise.
- They give you paid leave AND a pay rise? No wonder Swedish taxes are high.
- I will be back in Sweden when lectures start again. Until then I will have fun with Thai boys. Such as Lek.
- And where is Lek?
- I don’t know. He never gave me any phone number. But I have a feeling he will show up soon.
Lek showed up soon. In the evening Larson went to soi 4, but not to drink or bang his head against the walls, only to look and socialise. When he entered Telephone Bar he saw the back of a familiar Thai boy sitting at the far end of the bar. The boy had not seen Larson come in, or pretended not to. Lek was talking to a large farang. Larson was not above eavesdropping and he moved closer to Lek and the farang. What is that language? They are speaking German. Ja, aber schnell! said the big guy. Kein problem, said Lek.
Larson was jealous. I have to give Thai boys points for being multi-linguistic, thought Larson. But what is Lek doing with this farang? Is something going on here? Larson went upstairs and sat down by a table. He didn’t want to watch Lek chatting away with that big German guy.
Ten minutes later Lek came up the stairs and joined Larson, who was on his second cola. Maybe Lek had seen Larson after all.
- Hi, said Lek. Pattaya you like?
- I was not too impressed with the locals, said Larson.
- I miss you, said Lek.
- Who is that man you were speaking to?
- Is my friend. Him hel me. I wan go German. I work restauran. Him hel me go. I waiting visa.
- You are going to Germany? And you speak German already?
- I learn.
A talented young man, thought Larson. I thought Lek was a country bumpkin but he sure gets around. He is going to work in Europe? I underestimated this guy. This proves how wrong Bjorn was about him. Lek is boyfriend material.
