59. A warning
Lek came in. He put his mobile phone in his pocket and wai’ed Bjorn, who nodded back.
- Who called you? asked Larson.
- My friend, said Lek.
- The German guy?
- Yes.
- I don’t like him, said Larson.
Bjorn picked up the Bangkok Post from the table. He began reading the cartoons.
- Do you know what this German man is doing? asked Larson. Do you know what kind of job he is getting you?
- Is restauran, said Lek.
- Be careful, said Larson. He is a bad man.
Lek thought about this for a moment.
- Is true, said Lek. Him no good heart.
- So you know that, said Larson. You will not go to Germany with him then?
- Go, said Lek.
- But you just said he didn’t have a good heart.
- No good heart but have money, said Lek. I wan money. If go German. Can have money so much.
Larson glanced at Bjorn. Why wasn’t Bjorn helping him convince Lek that this Dietmar fellow was bad news? Bjorn was hiding his face behind the newspaper. Larson knew what that meant and was annoyed. Bjorn was trying not to giggle. Can’t he take anything seriously? thought Larson. This Dietmar sicko is trying to recruit Lek to the most unsauvory schemes and Lek is too innocent to understand that.
- His name is Dietmar, right? asked Larson.
- Is him friend you? asked Lek.
- No. Far from it. I would never want to be friends with someone like him.
- Oh, said Lek.
- But I know what this Dietmar is doing.
- What he do?
- He will take you to Germany, sure. But he will not get you any restaurant job. It is far worse than that. Dietmar will make you do something very bad.
Lek looked at Larson without understanding.
- Dietmar, said Larson gravely, will force you into prostitution.
Behind his newspaper Bjorn bursted out laughing.
