Bangkok novel

67. Lek’s brother

Peter thought that once he had understood Bia’s contradictory talk the problem was solved. It was not.

Bia came home the same evening and went to bed without a word. Peter joined him. Bia turned his back to Peter but Peter poked him.
- Hello young man, said Peter. I have news for you.
Bia didn’t say anything but Peter could tell the boy was listening.
- We really need a new computer, said Peter. We can go and look at it tomorrow. How about that?
Bia didn’t reply.
- Did you hear me? asked Peter. We are getting a new one.
- No, said Bia.
- What?
- No. Not wan computer.
- Why?
- Up to me.
- I know you want a new PC.
- Not wan.
- Oh yes you do.
- No!

Bia was tense and he moved further away from Peter in the bed. I will let him sleep on it, thought Peter. Tomorrow he will be more agreeable.

The next day Bia still refused to have anything to do with any new computer. Peter scratched his head. Damned if you do and damned if you don’t, thought Peter. First he wanted a PC and now he gets angry if I mention it. This makes no sense at all.
- It is no longer about the PC, said Robert. And by the way I have to start charging you by the hour for talking to me about Bia.
- I will pay, said Peter.
- No need, said Robert. But perhaps you can teach my accountant that accounting means bookkeeping and not embezzlement?
- You have strong nerves running a business in Thailand, said Peter. But I don’t know what to do about Bia. He is angry whatever I do.
- It isn’t about the PC anymore, said Robert. Now it is about Bia being angry with you. There is no cure. Don’t mention it for a while. Let the subject rest.

Peter did so. A couple of weeks later Peter, without telling Bia what was the intention, took the boy to Power Buy. As expected Bia had to look at the computers in the shop and Peter bought one. Bia was happy. None of them mentioned the quarrel and peace was restored.

Larson was relieved when Lek told him that Dietmar left Thailand. He heard nothing more about Lek’s visa. Larson believed the Germany issue would die quietly.

Lek’s younger brother Noi appeared in Larson’s life. At 2am Larson and Lek were sleeping in the hotel room at the Malaysia when Lek’s mobile phone rang. Lek didn’t say what it was about but left. Five minutes later he returned with his brother, a younger copy of himself but shorter. The brother was even darker than Lek, perhaps because he was outdoors all day.

The brother remained standing. He was shy and not used to foreigners. He spoke no English.
- Him no place sleep, said Lek.
- Doesn’t he live somewhere in Bangkok? asked Larson.
- Lad Prao. Can not stay, said Lek.
- Why not?
- Him scare mafia.
- The mafia? asked Larson, thinking this sounded like a bad TV show.
- Him no pay money mafia. Mafia angry him.
- Why do they want money from your brother?
- Him not pay back.
- He borrowed from loan sharks?
- Yes. Can not pay. They angry him. Dangerous too much.

Only in Thailand, thought Larson. Here comes this guy in the middle of the night saying the mob is after him. How did Noi get into trouble? Is Lek involved too? Can the mafiosos come bursting in here looking for Noi? Probably not. But should I tell Noi to go hide somewhere else? There is no space for him here. What does he expect? To share the bed with Lek and I?
- Him sleep floor, said Lek.
- On the floor? Right on the floor? He can’t do that. Let me call the reception. Maybe they have a mattress or something. Or I can hear if they have a room available. Don’t worry, I will pay for it.
- No need, said Lek.

The boys didn’t want any mattress or an extra room. Noi slept on the floor, fully dressed, as if this was a normal way to spend a night. Larson fell asleep wondering why strange things seemed to happen routinely in Thailand.
