In Manchester Dandy Duff sat on the floor in an almost empty apartment. His only piece of furniture was a mattress in the corner. The last couple of nights he slept on it.
Duff had not realised how little a 20 kg baggage allowance in tourist class actually was. He could only bring his clothes and toiletries and a couple of photo albums. The rest he had to store with his parents. And this even as he had filled many garbage sacks with things he didn’t want to keep, and after he had sold and given away all the big things.
But many of the small things remained. His first writing book from school, for example. He could not throw that away. The clock his grandfather had given him before he died was too precious to dispose of. Duff’s music collection, built over many years. He had to keep that. And so on.
Duff had an attack of Manchester melancholia. Now that he was leaving he saw the city differently. It was actually quite nice in Manchester. Duff did small tours of the city to see it again before leaving. He visited the Town Hall clock tower and the library at St. Peter’s Square. What a magnificent building, thought Duff as he sat in the large round reading room under the dome. They don’t have this in Thailand. They hardly have libraries in Thailand. The Thais have many good qualities but great intellectuals they are not.
Duff walked across Exchange Square and looked at some teenage boys who where hanging around. The boys did not look at him. Duff had learned not to stare for too long at their faces or they would give him nasty comments. Better to give their butts a glance. This baggy pants fashion is unfortunate, thought Duff as he walked past the boys. Firm and tight is better.
Duff summed it up in his head. England has books and culture, Thailand has boys and cuisine. England is safe, Thailand is risky. England is grey and Thailand shines in bright colours. I have spent half my life in the UK, thought Duff. It is time to try somewhere else.
