9. Dating Fiat

Fiat stood me up, thought Duff. The rascal didn’t show and now he wants to meet me anyway. Have they no shame in this country? But maybe something had happened. Maybe he had been prevented from coming by events outside his control. Nah, that’s not likely. He was on campus earlier in the day. So why didn’t he come? Had he forgotten?

The phone in his hotel room rang and interrupted Duff’s thoughts.
- Hello, said the boyish voice.
- Oh hi there, said Duff in a measured tone.
- Where you go? I not see you ABAC.
- I was there, outside the library. You didn’t come.
- I come. But you not there.
- I waited half an hour and then I left at 6.30.
- I come 6.30. Go see movie with friend. Why you not wait me?
- I waited for you.
- Now I stay Telephone bar. Waiting you.
- Telephone bar? In soi 4?
- Yes. Waiting you. I stay upstair.

Should I really give this guy a second chance? thought Duff. He saw a movie? What a lame excuse. This is no way to treat a date. Does he realise it took me five hours sitting in bloody traffic jams to go out there? All that for nothing and now he expects me to come running to a bar in Silom by snapping his fingers?

But Duff was curious too. This is against my better judgement, Duff thought, but now I really want to see who this boy is. He has cost me a lot of time and money already. I might as well go over to Silom soi 4 and take a look.

Ten minutes later Duff entered Telephone, which was a real bar and not a go-go, it was a pub style place with gay farangs, gay Thai boys and waiters handpicked for their faces. Duff saw the ABAC boy sitting upstairs. Fiat wore his student uniform. He had opened three buttons in his shirt. He was handsome, similar to his picture, but nothing special, thought Duff.
- Hi, said the boy. I Fiat.
- Dandy Duff here.
- You handsome man. Green eye. I like. Blond hair. I like.
- I coloured it, said Duff. In reality my hair is reddish-brownish.
- Is beautiful, said Fiat. I have hair black. Not beautiful. And body you handsome. No fat.
- Thank you, said Duff. But I have to go to the little room now. The loo. I’ll be right back.

When Duff came back from his loo trip another farang man sat at his table. Fiat and the man were busy exchanging phone numbers, writing on a piece of paper. Duff was unsure of what to make of this and stopped a few steps away. Fiat looked up with a guilty smile. The man left with the paper in his hand.
- Is my friend, said Fiat.
- You have many friends, said Duff.
- No have. I not popular.
- Well, Khun Fiat. I am tired. I would like to go back to my hotel and sleep.

This is the final insult, thought Duff. First this Fiat chap asked me to come to ABAC, then he stood me up, then he didn’t apologise but blamed me, and now he is flirting with other men as soon as I turn my back. What a shameless creature. I have to get rid of him. When he is gone at least I can check the other boys in this bar. Maybe I can still save the day.

A waiter came with the bill. Duff only had time for a Sprite with ice but the bill contained other drinks Fiat had consumed before Duff arrived. Duff bit his tongue and paid. It is Thai style that I pay, thought Duff. It will look petty if I make a fuss about the bill.

Duff waited for the boy to get up and leave. The boy didn’t so Duff had to get up from the table first. Duff walked the boy to the entrance of the soi.
- Nice to meet you Fiat, said Duff.
- Nice to meet you too, said Fiat. Call me?
- Sure, said Duff.
- You want taxi? said Fiat.
- You first.
- Here is one, said Fiat. He held open the car door for Duff.

Duff could hardly refuse to get in. The Thai boy waved, turned and walked back to Telephone bar. The taxi took off. Duff sighed and sank back in the seat.
