Chalerm has bought a wireless headset for his computer. He put it on and said:
- Attention please. Lady and gentleman!
Then he stopped because he had forgotten the rest of what people say in the loudspeakers at airports.
The headset was 150 baht at Pantip Plaza. Amazingly cheap. The sound quality is what you can expect for the price, but Chalerm doesn’t mind.

I have stopped whitening my teeth. Got to let them rest. I tried the 8% peroxide from Boots for a couple of nights but I don’t see any difference like I did with the 15% my dentist gave me. Boots don’t sell fake stuff do they? Nah, maybe it is just too weak.
The teeth are a lot whiter than they used to be but I would like to do a bit more later.

Good enough for now

The flight sim software I ordered and paid in advance for from the US has not arrived. After four weeks I wrote to ask if they had sent it. They said they had. I said it was probably stolen by Thai postal or customs workers. They said wait another couple of weeks.
Still no shipment and it has been eight weeks. I wrote them saying I was willing to pay for FedEx shipment. Sending it through the thieves again is a waste of time.

Chalerm has discovered Internet phone. He is using Skype and calling everyone he can think of, using the headset.
—
I don’t normally call people back home on the phone. I feel too removed from Farangland and I get a culture shock when I talk to them. It is like they speak to me from another universe. I prefer email and snail mail.

Snail mail

I have been thinking about the row with Chalerm last month. It was over nothing. Actually that is normal. Thai boys like to make drama over nothing. It is a way to release tension, maybe. But it had been so long since last drama-over-nothing that I fell back to my Western habit of looking for a logical reason for the conflict. What if there is no logical reason? Then there is no logical solution either. It is drama for the sake of drama. Just have to wait it out.

I haven’t told Chalerm that I am going to Jakarta yet. He will probably not like it. He thinks I should stay at home here in the computer corner. But I want to travel more and he must get used to it.
—
I consider Chalerm to be the head of my Bangkok Bureau. He is the Charge d’ affaires when I am away. But no more home alone parties please.

You want the reasons why I don’t take Chalerm on my trips?
1. He has classes and work. He can’t bum around Asia like I can.
2. It costs twice as much.
3. He wants to go to Singapore or Hong Kong or Farangland. Maybe Japan would do too. I want to go to cheap and cheerful places for the (ahem) cultural experience.
4. Consider the following list of places we have been to and Chalerm’s reaction to them:
Hua Hin. Boring.
Ko Samet. Boring.
Phuket. Boring.
Chiang Mai. Boring.
Pattaya. Boring.

Ko Samet
