High technology

Mysterious

I can’t access my email from home anymore. This is the 3rd day I can’t get the Gmail site. But when I go to the Internet cafe it works fine.

What is going on? Is it one of these mysterious only-in-Thailand things that happens to me?

I have two theories.

Theory one: True Telecom “High” Speed Internet has messed up their site block filter. This is always possible but even as they are known to mess up most things that are mess-up-able they should have fixed it by now.

Theory two: If some spammer nearby has used an IP address near my own to spam Gmail, Gmail might have banned my area.

What do you think?

While on the subject of technology, we don’t have any flat screen television in The Mansion. How can we live with an old square box tube TV?

This is human suffering. This is poverty. This is destitution. Do others understand how degrading our situation is? I walk down the soi and I swear people can tell just by looking at me that I don’t own a flat screen television. Tsk tsk 25 inch tube, they whisper.

Not that I watch television anyway, but in case I want to catch up with Sponge Bob it would be nice to have a 42 inch Sony Bravia HD 1080. Or better.

If you have one laying about the house you can send it to the 7-Eleven and Chalerm will pick it up. Thank you.

Chalerm was sleeping when I came home from the Internet cafe, where I now have valid reason to visit often due to my email block. So I didn’t get to talk to him about the aquarium. I think a book is in order. Or at least a one page executive summary on how to run a saltwater aqurium.

gmail is blocked? try cleaning out your IE Cache or whatever you use to browse.. also try reseting the defaults on your browser.. have you tried different browsers like Firefox?
what does the page say when you go to Gmail?

theory two sounds too difficult to do.. gmail can’t ban an area.. a govt can but not a email provider from my knowledge

ask virtualdr.com which is a site i use for tech support .. its free:)

One page executive summary, for a Thai boy? That will sit unloved on the coffee table. One paragraph might be more like it.

I have tried both in Safari and Firefox. After a minute of “connecting to…” I get this error msg:

    Network Error

    A communication error occurred: “”
The Web Server may be down, too busy, or experiencing other problems preventing it from responding to requests. You may wish to try again at a later time.

For assistance, contact your network support team.

This is the timeout no reply message they also give me when the connection is too slow.

I have no knowledge about cache or how to look after a salt water fish tank. I do understand flat screens as we just bought one as our tv, so I was informed was not doing well. I also know about sleeping as my BF often has naps. I used to think that this was only something my grandfather did!

Sounds like a DNS error at True. Try using the free IPs at OpenDNS.Org. Their DNS servers are faster than R=True’s anyway.

I don’t know how your connection works, but if you have any kind of modem, you might want to try to reset and/or unplug it (and of course reboot your computer). Not sure, but it might just be a port problem.

  8. Silom Farang Says:

Reset broadband router: did that, no effect
Reset computer: did that, no effect
Using OpenDNS: I do that already, no effect
Reset browser: did that, no effect
Change browser: did that, no effect

Last suggestion: using “https://mail.google.com” (with the “s” after http; ssl connection); maybe a silly idea, but I’m afraid that’s the best I can do.
    Best of luck anyway!

The https trick worked! Dennis, you are a genius.

  11. Dennis Says:

Glad I could help! My way to thank you for your great work!
By the way, when are we going to be able to read the next chapters of “Bangkok Novel”? ;-)

  12. Silom Farang Says:

    I guess I owe you now…

I just had a deep philosophical insight about the novel. I realised the only way to get more chapters is to write them. :-P

I’m glad the https trick worked for you! You’re not alone with this gmail glitch. The same thing happened to me last year on campus at the university I was at in China. Don’t know why it happens, though.

  14. Whystler Says:

You don’t need a flat screen, sheesh! :)

You;’re worse than my partner! He keeps wimpering whistfully about it while we watch our regular 36 inch TV. He has such a nice set up in here.
