In the bushes

forest.jpg

There is a small park near my hotel. It isn’t really a park, but more like a grove or a handfull of trees. But it is enough for some boys to gather there in the evening, hoping for business.

The first night I met three young men there. They were Brown, Blue and Red, named after the colour of their shirts. Red was the most fem one, bordering on ladyboyism.
- You like me? asked Red.
- Yes, I like you, I said.
- One hundred, said Red.
- Sure. I like you one hundred percent, I said.
- No, no. One hundred ringit, said Red.
I pretended to be surprised.

The trio thought I should bring all of them to my hotel room. This was a bit much.

They explained that they worked at restaurant X.
- I never saw you at restaurant X, I said.
- We work upstairs, said the boys.
- I am a waiter, said Red.
- We are all waiters, said the other two.
- Today is our day off, said Brown.
- We have no money, said Blue. - We pay 20 ringit per day for our room. But we use the tip money to pay for the room. But when we don’t work we don’t get any tip.

I left the trio. Two hours later I ran into Brown outside my hotel.
- What are you doing here? asked Brown.
- I stay in this hotel, I said. - What are you doing here?
- I stay in this house, said Brown and pointed to a worn shophouse across the street.
Brown tried to convince me I should take him to my room. But as charming as he was, I told him I wanted to sleep alone.

Two days later I went to restaurant X. I had a meal but didn’t see any of the trio. After the meal I walked through the entire complex and there was still no sign of any of them. Strange. Did they make it up? Or had they been fired?

The next evening, when I (quite by coincidence, as I hope you understand) walked by the trees again, a different trio of boys sat there. They were also friendly and wanted to invite themselves to my room.

The third evening the group of three had expanded to five. I said hello when I walked by them. Two other boys came walking and caught up with me from behind. They both looked gay. One in a white shirt was handsome, better looking than any of the others. Nobody said anything, but I suspected they walked past me to pose and give me a silent offer.

Suddenly the group of boys that had been lurking for two days came running and said somethig to the newcomers. They grabbed the newcomers and threw them to the ground. Punch punch. The two new boys ran away, persued by their enemies. They jumped over a fence and into traffic and ran across a road. Cars honked and braked.

The attackers didn’t follow the newcomers across the road. I lost sight of the handsome one in the white shirt but the one in a yellow shirt lurked by the road. He said hello to me. I said hello back. I didn’t ask him about the incident. It was clear to me what it was about. The five in the park were moneyboys and they didn’t want competition from the two new boys. Hence they attacked the new boys and chased them away.

It wasn’t dangerous, not for me anyway. I kept walking and pretended not to see anything. It happened at 9 pm and it was over in ten seconds.

The one in the yellow shirt came walking after me. I turned and told him not to follow me. He didn’t speak any English so I used hand gestures.

I had my sights on yet another candidate, a cute boy who was buying (of all things) a padlock on the street. Something told me this one was on the game. I made eye contact with him but he didn’t respond. Two girls (his sisters?) saw my interest in the boy and giggled. What was going on? I watched as the cute candidate walked down the street and entered a house. Aha, the gay hairdresser’s place. I guess he was taken for the evening.
