Decadent Jakarta
I went to this “Stadium” I had heard about. It was a straight disco on the 4th floor of a hotel near Moonlight.
Entrance was 45,000 rupiah. The DJ played hard techno. The disco was luxurious, with marble and brass and glass and mirrors.
The staff didn’t have much of a gaydar. I had hardly entered before someone pushed me into the arms of a “madam”. She had me sit down with some ladies of negotiable virtue. She introduce me to one after the other of these ladies while I shook my head and told them no thanks. One of them was a stunner but still not enough to turn me straight.
It looked like they had two dozen ladies for hire. They were hanging around at the back of the disco.
The madam showed me the price on a calculator display: 285,000 rupiah.
- Includes room upstairs for one hour, said the madam.
In between this a shady-looking man came over and pulled a small plastic bag from his pocket. It contained small red tablets.
- What is this? I asked.
- Is good, said the man.
I waved him off. It was probably dadah, called ya ba in Thailand and methamphetamine in the West.
Twice more did other men wave such pills under my nose in this disco. They made no effort at hiding their trade. So much for the strict narco regime in Indonesia. What if one of these guys slipped some pills in my pocket and called the cops on me? I would get arrested before I could spell f-r a-m-e-d.
Many of the guards who worked in the disco looked more like Mafia than upholders of law and order. And the manager had eyes with the warmth of a crocodile.
I left.
Congratulations, Jakarta. You just out-sleazed Bangkok.

Hmmmm… Jakarta doesn’t sound like a very nice place, would you say? At least now I know what places to avoid if I ever go to Thailand.
