On Borneo again
Another visa run. In the evening I went to the same spot by the harbour where I have been on previous visits to Kota Kinabalu, the place with benches and a sea view. There are always people in this area.
This time I was chatted up by some girls in school uniforms. They waved and shouted from a distance that I was cute. There were four of them. The leading figure came over first and I recognised her. I had seen her before in various shapes - a square face and a short, masculine hairstyle, an assertive attitude and a manly smile. She was a dyke, a tomboy, a lesbian. I was sure at least two of the others were lesbians too.
- Do you want release, sir? the dyke asked.
Release? They speak good English here, but sometimes they use funny expressions. But the meaning was clear enough and I said no thanks. A gay man and a butch lesbian in bed? Heaven forbid.
The four girls naturally split into two couples when talking to me, signalled by who each one stood closer to. I was tempted to tease the leader about her tomboyness, or to ask her how long she and the girl next to her had been lovers.
But they were just teenagers and it could be a sensitive subject. They were obvious to me but maybe they didn’t think so themselves. They could have self-image issues or religious issues or who knows what. Don’t ask, don’t tell and don’t say it aloud even if you see it.

I don’t know if I will be affected or not. It will become clear after New Year.
