Chalerm’s verdict on Phuket is in. It is harsh.
“Boring. Expensive. We go Phuket one time. But not go again.”
Chalerm had been in a good mood on this trip but when we were about to leave he was tense. He was late when we were to check out from the hotel, and he was still on the beach when the taxi we had ordered arrived. Chalerm had booked the taxi so he should know when it was expected.
Rather than apologising for being late (and keeping me locked out of our room since he had the key) he told me to hurry up.

Air Asia. The Late Airline. The flight to Bangkok was two hours delayed due to “maintenance requirements”. So they have parts falling off the plane?
Three men from the Middle East had excess baggage worth 4 000 baht. They tried to haggle.
- We have been in twelve countries and this is the only place to charge overweight! they said.
Then they tried to bribe the check-in guy. That didn’t work.
Finally they claimed only to have 2 000 baht. That didn’t work either. The check-in guy laughed at them.

Despite having two extra hours to find the gate the three men from the Middle East failed to show up for boarding, and the airline staff had to go look for them after the rest of us were seated.

Chalerm had bought a large umbrella in Patong. The umbrella never showed up on the baggage carousel in Bangkok. I was about to tell Chalerm to write it off as a loss (it was 80 baht) when I saw a sign saying “oversize luggage desk”. They had the umbrella.
Our taxi driver going back to town was of the tuk-tuk variety. He would constantly accelerate and then take his foot from the accelerator pedal, accelerate some more, and take his foot from the pedal. This is how they drive tuk-tuks. But tuk-tuks have small engines. When you drive a car like that it makes for unpleasant, go-stop-go driving.
It was 2am when we arrived at The Mansion. Chalerm was heading for Thonburi since he had a test in the morning. I asked him if he wanted to continue in the same taxi.
- No, I will take a better one, said Chalerm.
I think the driver understood that. But he brightened when I gave him an undeserved 40 baht tip.

Very amusing, and oh so familiar…
It’s a Thai boy thing to delay then blame the farang!
We stayed in the Karaoke for far too long because he needed to sing more songs!!! this despite us having a train to catch to Si Saket. The six stress filled minutes left to pack and check out of the hotel were interspersed with ‘LIL LIL’ Quickly Quickly and a very grumpy Thai Boyfriend…It was all HIS fault!
