A reader sent me an email about the Japanese “nicknames”:
Actually, “chan” added to a name is a diminutive, not a nickhame. Like Johnny for John. Futher, kun is a form of polite-language (called in Japanese “Kago”). The Japanese language changes according to the rank of the speaker and the person addressed, and the changes yield Kago. So-and-so-Kun is Kago for use when a superior, as a teacher, addresses a young man of lesser rank. “Sensei” might be the form of address that the young man would use back to a respected teacher. The sensei-young man relationship is standard in Japan, and we see one instance of it in Pokemon.
