And the moon was full
As usual Chalerm pretended he would not celebrate Loy Krathong with me, and as usual he was bluffing.
This was our 5th festival. We have sent our float under Sathorn Bridge three times, once we were at Rama 3 and this year we went to Lumpini Park. The park was crowded, but not overcrowded. There were dozens of policemen and soldiers to watch us lest the celebration suddenly turned into a counter-coup.
The moon was full. What a coincidence. Not really, this is a full moon festival. Chalerm bought a float, we lit the candle and the incense and Chalerm held the float up to his head while praying. I wished for another good year for both of us.
I pulled a plastic bag with hair out of my pocket. Earlier in the day, when Chalerm heard I was going to the gay slum hairdresser to get a haircut, he had asked me to save the hair.
Chalerm spoke to the slum hairdresser about this on the phone, and the slum hairdresser agreed. He cleaned the floor before we began so my hair would not be mixed up with that of other customers. Not that my hair is similar to theirs anyway, all his other customers have black thick Asian hair while mine is lighter and thinner.
Collecting what fell off my head came at no extra charge, and I paid 100 baht as always.
I asked Chalerm about this custom. Chalerm said putting hair on the float symbolised a new beginning and good luck.
We did not put any money on our float. The kids who swam around in the lake like fish would be disappointed when they came to our float. Not a single satang to find there, only a mouthful of farang hair.

That’s the lake with the water monitor monsters, I hope boys were not swimming there. These little boats must annoy the watery residents of the lake.
