I see the former manager of My Way bar in Bangkok is sitting outside on the street now. I heard he lost his job in the bar. He looks forlorn. Should I feel guilty?

I am afraid my annual visit to My Way to check if anything has changed has slipped to once every second year. I go to see if they have cleaned the place or maybe changed the concept from “grotty and grim” to “cheerful and wholesome”. But they never do.

Is this why the manager has stopped saying hello to me? Or is it because I am never interested in any of his street-rough straight Isaan boys? I think he still has a herd of them somewhere.

In very local news: a middle-aged Thai woman put her big butt on my copy of The Nation newspaper. This happened while I was having dinner in a restaurant. I had put the newspaper to the side to eat and before I knew it here comes Mrs. Broadarse to sit on it.

I could have made a scene and yelled “you stupid woman!” but decided it wasn’t worth it. Would I really want this newspaper back considering what it had been through? I wrote it off as a loss.

Burger King on Silom road has increased the price of a Double Whopper meal from 199 baht to 214. I guess they want extra for leaving the bacon raw. The Bank of Thailand says inflation in the kingdom is low. This must be why the price of the Double Whopper has increased from 139 baht five years ago.

But despair not, the new Au Bon Pain across the road is decidedly gay. The place is called Au Bon Pain Zuellig, after the building it is in.

So far the Silom moneyboys have stayed away from this sandwich restaurant, which has a trendy interior and a nice view of the street. But there are many middle-class Thai boys who drop by while pretending they are not cruising.

Weekends you can see gay Singaporeans and other male tourists who warm up before soi 4 and DJ Station. They pretend nothing.
