Patpong and video

The Osmonds
As seen in Patpong

I walked through Patpong, the world-infamous nightlife strip on Silom road. Two neat and well-groomed Americans stood in front of a video camera. They were one man and one woman.

They looked so wholesome and clean, like the Osmonds. I don’t normally see that kind of American in Thailand - white, Christian-conservative, and on a mission to save the world.

With the bars in the background the two farangs spoke about a charity they ran. I heard them repeatedly say “saving young girls from prostitution”. They did this by teaching the girls alternative crafts and job skills. “But we need your help” they said to the camera, “and we don’t even have our own building yet”.

Once upon a time, before I had lived in Thailand, I might have been impressed by their do-good-ism.

Maybe they could “rescue” some of the least attractive bargirls, those who were dropping out of the trade anyway. But to “rescue” the ones who were popular and made big money? Forget it.

I walked down the soi when a young Thai man came up from behind. He walked faster than I did. He spoke loudly on his mobile phone. This annoyed me.
- Blah blah blah, said the Thai boy.
- Oh really? I said.
He didn’t get the sarcasm. But he smiled and finished the phone conversation.

He said he worked in a massage place. Would I be interested in a massage?

I wasn’t, and the boy ran to catch the Skytrain. Thai boys don’t normally run. There had to be money in it for him.

Chalerm is here. He came after midnight and went straight to bed. He is still in bed now, 17 hours later.

Chalerm gave our DVD player to the janitor. It didn’t work anymore and the janitor wanted to fix it. I was not consulted.

I want it back. I don’t have much faith in his fixing. If shaking and banging the player and cleaning it inside doesn’t help I will buy a new player.

We had this player for a while. Is a life of 4-5 years reasonable for an el cheapo DVD player? I guess so.

If I buy another Soken the old remote might work, and I can use the Dolby Surround speakers we have.

There are now 1421 reader’s comments in the spam box of this blog. I am not going to look through them for any misplaced comments. I surrender to the machines.

It is hard to be famous, SF! :-D

Look at the number of spam messages as the measure of the popularity of your blog. In your free time you can try to find out, how to make a money out of them. If you did - you can buy a building to save sweet bar boys… ;-)

Or you can buy votes and become first non-thai PM! You was called a PM already in a taxi - try it now in the real life! :-D
