People in the Internet cafe 19

I have determined that Big Smile has a boyfriend.

The boyfriend is a dark boy with large inviting lips. I have heard people call him “ladyboy”. There is nothing ladyboyish about his behaviour or dress (other than a big mouth) but the Thai term “katoey” is used loosely and might as well mean that people consider him to be gay.

The ladyboy is an annoying person who has nagged me more for money than anyone else. He does not hear the word “no”. Once I had to speak harshly to him.

The ladyboy was also responsible for a Fat White Cow moment, where an American female tourist around 60 gave me eyes that were meant to nail me to the wall. She did this because the ladyboy sat next to me, leaning across the armrest of my chair while repeating his tale of hardship and hunger. To the tourist it might have looked as if I enjoyed myself.

What is my evidence for the Big Smile + Ladyboy union? Lately I have noticed that Big Smile and the ladyboy arrive and leave the Internet café together. They didn’t do this before.

I have also heard Big Smile refer to the ladyboy as “darling”. This is “tee rak” in Thai. Again this word can be used loosely. Friends can use it as a joke. Family members can use it among themselves. But Big Smile has said it while sitting on the ladyboy’s lap.

Finally there is the walking thing. I have seen them walk together down the soi, unaware that I was watching them. They walked in a couple-ish way. Sorry, I don’t have a definition of how couple-ish walking looks, but some couples do that and I can see it.

What next? Does the possessive brother of the owner know Big Smile has a boyfriend? Is trouble brewing? I need to observe more to find out. Will the ladyboy and Big Smile restrain their cuddliness when the brother is around? Will the ladyboy fade away and let the brother (who has more money) dominate Big Smile when he wants to?

I will report back when I know more.

This is as suspenseful as the novel! Speaking of the novel, I’m reading it. I recently finished the first novel, and am starting to savour the second. Thank you so much SF for writing this. It’s compelling!
