I have never seen this “Not The Nation” website before. It looks very funny. Thanks for introducing me to it!

Spoke too soon! It is not that funny really, actually some parts are very sad.

“Why waste a weekend learning Thai when I can be kitesurfing…..”

If he’s living in the country, the least he could do is spend some time on the plane or train learning Thai.

Yea, it’s funny but it’s a tough act to follow sometimes with the real facts in Thai politics.

The really funny thing about this spoof research is that it’s so damned plausible! Exactly what you’d expect! Fits very well with my own observations of immigrants in Thailand - and, indeed, with the evidence of this blog. SF doesn’t seem to have much spare money, but spends his nights chatting in Thai to the locals. Great!

Hey! I am just feigning poverty to keep the gold-diggers away.

Well, the idea is funny but untrue. I can think of three farang just off the top of my head who have climbed to the top of the social and economic ladders in Thailand, and did it while speaking, reading, and writing fluent Thai.

After all, if you make it to Senior Vice President at (say) Kasikornbank, all of your memos, documentation, and meetings will be in Thai. Being ignorant of the language would be a major disqualification for the job. And I know this personally as well, having previously been turned down for a software job with the comment, “But if you were only able to communicate with the other members of the staff….”

Aside from the banker, there is an Englishman who holds dual nationality (quite a rarity) and an Australian who has become quite famous in television circles. The Australian writes BOOKS in Thai.
