I feel conspicious, walking around in a Bangkok shopping centre with dark sunglasses. I handed in the old Macintosh to the repair shop without taking my sunglasses off. I don’t want to scare the natives.
They said they would check the Mac and call me to discuss the repairs tomorrow.
Chalerm is teasing me.
- Now what you do? No video no Internet! You can only read book.
I can watch Thai television too but I am not that desperate yet.

I am paranoid about repairing stuff in Thailand. In Farangland most computer problems are due to software. But in Thailand it usually ends in hardware repairs - new motherboard, new hard drive, or whatever. The repair guys cheat a lot. Sometimes I suspect them of re-installing the operating system and charging for new hardware they don’t put in.
But I know one small shop where they seem honest and competent. I have known the owner for years. They are dedicated Macintosh service people. So I went to them even if it is quite a distance from Silom.

I have used surge protection for my Mac. But I figure my repeated attempts at reboot when it hang was too much for it. I don’t want to spend more than max 5 000 baht fixing it. It is worth something as a backup computer, Chalerm can use it for chat, and it would be nice to look through the data on the hard drive to see if there is something I want to keep.
Backup? Backup is for cowards and sissies. Actually I DO have backup. All my important files are on an external hard drive, and a mirror hard drive, and none of these are affected by my Mac’s illness.

I went to look at new Macs. The new 20 inch iMac is gorgeous. To see it is to want it. Steve Jobs has good taste for a straight guy. But then I saw the 24 inch and it was even more tempting. What a huge, brilliant display. Who said material things can’t bring happiness? Give me an iMac 24 and I am in computer nirvana.
Since I can’t afford the 20 inch I might as well buy the 24 inch as I am getting broke anyway. That makes sense, doesn’t it?

The 24-inch iMac offers a panoramic resolution of 1920 by 1200 pixels — 30 percent more screen real estate than the 20-inch model.
That about says it!!!

Chalerm likes fish, you have a old Mac - it’s obvious.

The manual that comes with the 24-inch higly recommends that users wear sun glasses while operating the machine. So you are in luck!
