Look carefully- it's the swastika reversed, and is a Buddhist symbol, indicating peaceful co-existence. You will see it all over Malaysia in Buddhist temples. I just looked at the photos from Sandakan and in the 2nd photo that is clearly a swastika, does that symbol have some other significance in Malaysia?
