I was hungry at 3am and went to the 7-Eleven. About half a dozen soi dogs were out, forming a pack and barking at me. They followed me from a distance as I walked down the soi, thereby blocking my return to The Mansion.
The dogs get territorial at night, especially if no people are around.
I am a brave man. I happily fight mad dogs in the dark. But for financial reasons I took a taxi from the 7-Eleven back to The Mansion. It was 35 baht. That’s cheaper than rabies shots and stitching up my legs. Sadly, budget considerations forced me to pass on this great opportunity to kick some canine ass.
Murphy’s law has a variation for soi dogs. If I had not taken a taxi back home there would be aggressive dogs, now a whole dozen of them, blocking my way. But if I did take a taxi there would be no dogs in the soi. They would have disappeared because Murphy’s law made them.
So when I went back in the taxi there wasn’t a dog in sight. And the driver gave me funny looks. Why did I hire him to go such a short distance? Why not? I am an eccentric, rich foreigner. I do as I please.

The ladyboy-in-training says he will not have another gap year in 2008. He is signing up for school.
Maybe he has realised that playing games and fooling around in the Internet cafe saying “kha” isn’t a career?
I don’t know what he will study but I told him education is a good thing.
Then, in one of my moments of weakness, I gave him 500 baht so he could buy something fashionable for Christmas. I told him what the money was for. He can not buy petrol for his little red motorbike or Japanese cartoons. He must buy clothes and I want to see them.
I don’t think the ladyboy-in-training can count on his Chinese grandfather for money to buy make-up and accessories. The grandfather dislikes the fem behaviour of his grandson, and the two hardly speak. The parents are more understanding, including the father, who come to think of it might have tendencies himself.

It comes as a startling revelation to most Thai boys like ladyboy-in-training that doing nothing all day actually gets boring after a while.
Since Thai boys don’t have hobbies, don’t like reading, don’t exercise, or do anything that other human beings do with their time, that only leaves wholesome pastimes like drugs, drinking, gambling and, of course, every Thai boy’s #1 favourite, sleeping.
