I suspect the boys in Jakarta suffered from the same schizophrenia as Muslim boys in Malaysia. Nobody is gay but everyone is doing it. For a Westerner it is unusual having to hold back from using phrases such as “we gay people”. Or “at the gay club”. Don’t mention it by name. Do it but don’t talk about it. A couple of times I told people in Jakarta that I was gay. A group of youths were outside McDonald’s and a girl said:
- Hey, I saw you here before. What do you like? Boys or girls?
- Up to me.
- Haha! You must like boys!
- It is secret.
- You want a boy? We have boys!
