Lately I had let my guard down with regards to the undercooked “sa-tek gai” chicken burger they sell at the 7-Eleven.
Tags: gay Thailand, Thai foodAfter the Big Smoke episode Chalerm had agreed that he would not use live fire in the apartment anymore. But I came home to find Chalerm having fired up the flowerpot-looking thing with coal again. He sat on the balcony and was making fondue. The sliding door to the apartment was wide open and the TV was turned up loud. He had put a large electric fan in front of the door opening, blowing air out to avoid smoke getting into the house.
- Ahem, I said. – You said you would not do this again.
- Is not inside, said Chalerm.
- It is in the apartment.
- No, is outside.
- You are still in the building.
Chalerm put more coal on. At least it wasn’t BBQ this time so there was less smoke.
He seems to have thought that the problem was the smoke detectors in the house, and that if he avoided that and technically was outside he could do it. I let him finish eating before raising the question in bed. We speak best in bed.
- Please don’t use any fire here, I said.
- Why? You say can not inside. This outside.
- You are still making smoke that can bother the neighbours. In an apartment building you just don’t burn anything, be it inside the rooms or on the balcony.
- Neighbour not say.
- And I worry what happens to the coal once you are done.
- I put water.
- That’s good but I would still you didn’t do this. It is a fire hazard.
Silence.
- If you really want to cook on the table we can get one of those portable electric cookers, I said.
- OK!
See? Bribery helps. Actually, two years ago we got as far as looking at electric cookers at Tesco Lotus. But faced with the choice of the cooker or a DVD player both of us voted for the DVD player. Now it is time for another trip to the shop. And I will get rid of that coal bag in the kitchen.
